never accelerate through a closing gap

The trouble with closing gaps is that they close! And sometimes they can close faster than expected.

Is that THROUGH, or INTO?

Once you are through it it is an irrelevance as to how big it is, or how fast it is closing, so I would bring this down to defining GAP, and the possibility of the rear vehicle making up enough space in the time you intend to stay in front to pose a risk.

Never for novices, evaluate for experienced drivers? :)
It's only another slant on pulling out from a side road into gaps in oncoming traffic - if you can quickly match your speed to a vehicle which has just passed, and the closing vehicle is far enough back, then ensuring you dont stall, or miss a gear, you make the manouvre on merit.

That situation - get into L2 - and at an extra safe distance (met to many speed regulators recently , who slam on brakes),move as far to right as safe to do so ( don't forget the debris near barrier) -- flash .
Either pass as he moved over coz he/she couldn't/wouldn't/wasn't able to go faster(Last Corsa i drove , got my wrist slapped by Mrs B for speeding, lets just say it could get your licence revoked -1.2 16v), or move back into L1 and keep a respectfull distance from the wagon and wait till i could pass wagon and then see what numpty did.

I know this, and whilst the gap was closing, it was still large (10 car lengths) and closing very slowly. I undertook, was still a safe distance behind the lorry...

I'm sorry, but that does not compute.

At 70mph, a 2 second gap is (2*70*1.46667) 205 feet or (/14.5) 14 car lengths. Given that you needed a safe gap to the heavy (14 car lengths) and a safe gap from the Corsa (2*50*1.46667 / 14.5 = 10 car lengths), the minimum gap should have been 25 car lengths (having added 1 for your vehicle). And that's without allowing for the lane change time.

Sorry - I don't drive by numbers so my figures might not be 100% accurate but I do know how far it takes me to stop in varying conditions when I'm there through experience even if I couldn't tell you exactly how far away something is. I'd rather take this approach and rely on what I know than spend my time behind the wheel calculating distances and car lengths. Anyway, I might have a very long car....

I don't think any normal people do drive by numbers. And I quite understand if you made a mistake in specifying the gap. Ten car lengths sounds like a lot, but it doesn't look like very much at 70mph.

I wasn't intending to 'catch you out' and I'm sorry if it looked that way. My concern was to ensure that we were all working with accurate and reasonable information.
