'Bullying' council buys £100k mobile camera to issue parking fines on the school run

Now at the risk of calling me cynical, but when there was a parking problem with the school near my parents, the school sent a letter to all parents informing them that poor parking was a risk to the kids and illegal and that the police had been informed of the issue. A week later the local beat copper and two PCSO's went down and started having words with illegal parkers for a couple of days, the next two days they went round handing out tickets. They do every 6-9 months or so but it does seem to keep things in check.

I rather suspect that it is far less profitable hence why it's not so popular when compared with something that is predicted to make nearly £38k profit.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

And the usual

What interests me about this, when they talk about the success of these schemes they talk about, income generated from fines. Which they want to increase, they never seem to stop the problem. If they where really interested in safety, they would educate
using police, or change the road a little fines would be a last resort.

After similar schemes were trialled in Bournemouth and Basildon, the camera is expected to lead to an extra 2,000 to 3,000 penalty charge notices a year.

We had loads of traffic issues around my school; a couple of kids had been run over. People who lived on the road parked on the road, so the road was already one lane. Then parents would come to pick up their children + local traffic + buses. We had the police around to educate drivers, and direct traffic. The council have now put bays in for the locals to park their cars, there is more than enough, and so parents can use them. We also have a few more barriers to stop kids running in to the road. The senior staffs are at the school gates at the end of the day, four teachers at the bus stop (usually one will be a senior member of staff). I suspect the problem with is approach it costs money and does not make any.

I'm normally against these, as it ends up in the ridiculous situation in London where you have NSL loitering at 3AM to give out fines to people who fail to see badly signposted "No Left Turns" in poor visibility.

However... something like this would be a great help round where I live. There are 3 schools, all the mums drive SUVs and believe they have the God given right to park them starsky-and-hutch-style, anywhere they please. Come school time, the roads are both dangerous and heavily congested purely because of selfish behaviour.
