But Essex Rob.. Please to look up IG's posts on COAST und his Hendon notes. His are the words of true wisdom und we also have something which Jazz has found in family attics und which we will be scanning to upload for discussion now Ted und IG have kicked themselves for forgetting about these gems from childhood.

More later as I have kittens to sort out und I have spent way too much time chatting.

How did you get on ?

I hope you identified the roadworks and were able to slow appropriately ...
(up here the Council has decided we should all mostly drive on ice rinks - and another 2 weeks of this forecast - already had 2 wks + !)

Got on ok I believe, I am usually able to identify the roadworks changes ok its just the more ambiguous things that always leave me paranoid. Such as along the top western strech of the m25 werew roadworks force the m25 southbound into 2 different sections (one with 2-3 lanes and one bit with 1 lane ) and I hasd to take the one lane bit and there was a 50 mph l;imit sign in between the one lane and 2 lanes and it was confusing as to know if that meant both bits were 50, I assumed they were but did around 40 in case.

I shocked to see how many people contravene red lights on the big motorway roundabouts. I saw 4 in that one journey.

Making the jounrey back today!

When you say that you 'had to' that might imply events around you overtook you and you were not really 'in charge' ?
It would be very strange to have 2 lanes one speed and one another on the same stretch of Motorway (slip roads excluded).
Did you see 40mph for cars or lorries, as sometimes they do provide speeds for lorries but it is rare.
I can understand the paranoia to default to the lower speed being the safe option for your license but if those behind you are driving very close or building up too that in itself can be intimidating, and might mean the speed is higher or people are not thinking and simply bunching as they do in average speed cam areas. Look for repeater signs and often prior to the specs units.

You mean that people came up to red lights off or onto Motorways and they ignored them ? Or did they not 'see' them and 'carry on' after a moments hesitation. Yes any of these would worry me too, but I would be trying to analyse what was going on in detail e.g. could the sun have obscured vision etc?

Well I hope you have a good run and the car goes well.

Rob ... This would be a contra-flow und the 50 mph would be applying to all lanes unless there are initial twin lollies und repeater signs to dictate otherwise on the contra-flowing part of the road works.

But in any case - you do not have to drive dead to the lolly sign as this ist the LIMIT und not the TARGET speed. (IG ist marooned bei uns .. he tell me what to type here...

I am a bit late to post but I hope you had safe journey und managed to beat the snow... which ist reminding us of Appenzell
