Rob - can't help you with M25/M40 BIT -but last weekend did go to Didcot from J9
-now Abingdon is not far from J 9/M40 - SO perhaps that's where you want to start looking .
My experience on Motorways ( and Ive been on them for almost 50 years now -so ,I'm not an amature . ) is to travel with the flow ,and what you feel comfortable with .Suggest you do a search on here for IG's Coast - that's a very good tool to have - as is the belief that you should doublecheck every driver's intention before taking it for granted .Never assume - wait for confirmation .And don't forget there's always some fast guy waiting to take the p** - he'll sit behind you in L3 ,TRYING TO PUSH YOU , then move out into L2, and undercut you to cut you up into L3 - let him -might be a p88 take, but he'll be in the police book for pulling over ,beefore you .
If you decide that L2 is a tad to slow - and L3 gets to the speed and brake situation -I'd advise L2 ( unless L1 has free slots ) - but then remember that L1 can mean deciding to get out to L2 ,and then getting back in .
The motorway system is out of control , I'd advise following the Highway code , but the M40 prats won't let you do that- so perhaps if your not to confident on the M40 - sit in L1, move out to pass a truck, then get back in and learn from the experience .( And don't forget - once past the truck - give him a left flash -to indicate pulling in -wait a sensible space and pul in)
Hope that's some help -
