Hi there, making a trip over to Abingdon in oxfordshire for a couple of weeks for x mas and would like some help prior to the journey so as to make me feel less nervous.

I shall be going the following route.(starting from the m25 as know the situation prior to this)

Joining the M25 at the junctiobn 27 with the m11, going anti clockwise until junction 16 with the m40.

I shall then be travelling up the m40 untill junction 7 with the a329.

shall then be travelling to stadhampton and making my way westward to abingdon.

Can anyone either tell me or discover for me whether or not there are any roadworks that will be affecting the motorways speed limit, as this always concerns me that i'll miss something, basically anything that changes the normal 70 mph limit of the m25 and m40 within the next 7 days. Also does anyone know the speed limit for the a329?

News and help would be very much apprieciated.

Regards,

Rob

Am not sure of current roadwork. Check on-line .. AA roadwatch - l;ocal scamprqt sites /TUNE into local radio as they give out essential moblie scam info.. etc.

M40 -OK. M42 ist the real nightmare.

I hope to help?? I hope I do so ... I have always tried to help others on-line as best I have been able to do so.

Me? Ted? IG? - as straight and true as God made us. Never underestimate the genuine .. we win in the end.

Well I had a quick look at M40 J1 o J7 (here).
All looks like 70mph from J1A (M25) - no roadworks but do check just before you go to be forewarned. :)

I am curious though as the speed between J1 and J1A - Nbound is 64mph ? and Sbound 67mph - now is this their speed that they are prosecuting at if so what is the displayed speed limit ?
It seems bizaare ...
On another note 'ItsEssexRob' what makes you so under-confident(?) that you may miss speed limits or roadwork signs?

It's a paranoia that speed cameras bring out in certain people. I often see people slow to 20 MPH to go through 30MPH cameras and I have a friend who won't go above 30MPH in a 40MPH camera zone. (despite people like weepej, not believing this happens). Some people don't trust them to be accurate (I wonder why?)

People are so scared of getting done by them these days because even if you've never been flashed yourself, you can bet that you know at least two other people who have. ( I don't know anyone who's killed anyone though....strange fact that!)

Yeah as stated in any previous posts people may have read of mine, I was so grateful for passing my test I became ultra paranoid for the first 2 years, because of the ridiculous 'new drivers act# which means I could make 2 errors missing a post and end up costing me thousands and ruining my livelyhood. I have untill May til it has been 24 months and intend to keep my liscence clean untill then.

and yes I am one of those who goes through speed cameras at 10 mph less than the speed, in case they have been set wrong or something messes up.

Whats this about variable speed limits on the m25 from the m11 junction anticlockwise to the m40?

Also regarding the speed limit from junction 1 to 1a of the m40, I wouldnt be travelling on that section would I? also how can you tell the speed? Site looks good btw.

Thanks

No you won'
t be going on the J1 to J1a of M40 ....
yes theM25 bet J27 to J16 does have various road speed reduction and a one roadworks ... the map shows you a list.
If you keep good distance between your car and the next and keep speeds sensible and one where you feel in control (take in and understand your surroundings) then you are likely to be going safely.

I totally recall your posts and understand the need to go lower than the speed limit to ensure your license / points / fines 'safety'.

Oh, whatever happened to simplistic road safety? Motorways = 70MPH, Rural roads = 60MPH, built up areas =30MPH

Anyone remember those good old days when we had the safest roads around?

Speaking off memory ... M25 heading from M1 toward Dover ist normal limit. The busy section going the other way toward the M4 und the Home Counties has the variables und you need to look at the gantries as these tell you the limit.

M11? I think ist normal unless there are road works ...

M42 has variables und around that time - you would not be free to use Hard shoulder unless sign say so due to congestion or even lane closure because of snow.

M40 ist as far as I recall ganz normal speed limit-wise.

However, given today's weather forecast und Xmas shoppers und so was .. I doubt you need worry about breaking the speed limit to be honest ..

Drive safely und have fun und toppest Christmas und do not worry - your posts? You sound like you have makings of a very fine driver already

Rob - can't help you with M25/M40 BIT -but last weekend did go to Didcot from J9
-now Abingdon is not far from J 9/M40 - SO perhaps that's where you want to start looking .

My experience on Motorways ( and Ive been on them for almost 50 years now -so ,I'm not an amature . ) is to travel with the flow ,and what you feel comfortable with .Suggest you do a search on here for IG's Coast - that's a very good tool to have - as is the belief that you should doublecheck every driver's intention before taking it for granted .Never assume - wait for confirmation .And don't forget there's always some fast guy waiting to take the p** - he'll sit behind you in L3 ,TRYING TO PUSH YOU , then move out into L2, and undercut you to cut you up into L3 - let him -might be a p88 take, but he'll be in the police book for pulling over ,beefore you .
If you decide that L2 is a tad to slow - and L3 gets to the speed and brake situation -I'd advise L2 ( unless L1 has free slots ) - but then remember that L1 can mean deciding to get out to L2 ,and then getting back in .
The motorway system is out of control , I'd advise following the Highway code , but the M40 prats won't let you do that- so perhaps if your not to confident on the M40 - sit in L1, move out to pass a truck, then get back in and learn from the experience .( And don't forget - once past the truck - give him a left flash -to indicate pulling in -wait a sensible space and pul in)

Hope that's some help -

Surely if lane 2 is clear enough for someone to undertake you, you should be asking yourself what you are doing in lane 3 anyway?

I don't know if you realised this Greenshed, but the OP has recently 'graduated' from just such an establishment yet it didn't help, so your suggestion obviously cannot help.

Constructive responses would be appreciated.

I am aware of that and my suggestion is to go back for more coaching as what has been delivered so far is, it would seem, inadequate for this particular "graduate".

Perhaps my directness was found to be not constructive but the advice stands, if a driver feels unable to drive without the confidence to do it lawfully and safely than they need to be coached.

Advice about how to avoid detection or to spot speed enforcement rather than supportive coaching on how to drive safely and legally are, IMHO, not helpful or the best advice.

And to repeat that same coaching, which wasn't adequate first time around, would do what exactly?

It is apparent that exactly the opposite of what you described has occurred within this thread.
This campaign does not encourage evasion of the speed limit or detection. There is plenty of advice on the forums about safe driving (much of that not referencing speed at all).

The SCPs have never given much useful advice of how to drive safely, or legally (unless you count 'repeating the same pre-graduate training').
What advice for safe driving have you ever given on these forums?

Can I also point out to people out there who may not know this, (and I'm sure that regular contributors to these threads don't need to be told this) . Although the roads may be clear of snow (thy are now in our parts), if the visibility is poor, (either snowing or misty), you really need to put your headlights on (not just sidelights).

The number of fools driving "safely" (less than 30MPH) but looming out of the gloom with very little "signs of life" showing are un countable. It may be xmas eve but people still need to spot you and not just spot that you are a muppet.

Surely if lane 2 is clear enough for someone to undertake you, you should be asking yourself what you are doing in lane 3 anyway?

Theory is great - in practice it's different .
AND if you're in a Q in L3 -

sometimes -THERE'S NO ALTERNATIVE but to get out into L3 early - it'sthat or sit in L2 /L1 ad infinitum .Perhaps you should be asking why someone gets out early -
BECAUSE lookin in mirror -a long Q has been spotted in L3 - SO it's get out early or wait till it passes ,and you'll find ( if you try driving a bit south of Leics, or on M6 /M40 or other Southern motorways  ) that courtesy does not exist on the UK motorways ( unless the lesser spotted Trafpols is around) .
Unfortunately -the cause of the Q in L3 is numpties driving in L2 ,with L1 empty .But then ,as most of the L2 hoggers know -you'll get unknown diseases if you venture into L1 :D :D
