I recently had the pleasure of working in Blackpool and was amazed at the amount of Cameras people there have to put up with, they seem to be every few hundred yards along the road.
I can honestly say I spent more time looking at my speedometer than anywhere else.
As a Scotsman from Ayrshire where we only have a handful i could not wait to get back home with my licence intact.

Yes, and they've got rid of all the (admittedly rather few) 40 limits within the borough and have erected signs saying "In Blackpool it's 30 or less!"

Mad Moggie will confirm how ridiculous the 30 limit is on the A583 approaching the M55.

Only the one road > 30mph that I can think of and that is Yeadon Way (the road from the end of the M55 into the main carparks) and this is 40 + the very short strip from the A583 that PeterE mentions..

From last check I think it is about 50 fixed cameras in Blackpool and about 10 that cover all the rest of the surrounding areas (St. Annes, Poulton Fleetwood etc)


I did have a screen grab from my PDA that showed all the cams position on a map, but I cannot find it.

And looking at that I've seen at least 4 or 5 places that are not shown as mobile sites at the south end of Blackpool alone (2 of which I've only ever seen the police check at)

If you can't maintain your speed without breaking the speed limit whilst being aware of what's going on around you how did you pass your test?

Perhaps you should slow down if you find it hard?

You'll find many passed their test even though they exceeded the speed limit - known as a driving fault. You can have up to 16 driving faults.

You can break the speed limit 16 times on your test and still pass (assuming you get no other strikes)?

If a candidate acquires several (three or more) driving faults in the same category, the examiner may consider the fault a recurring and dangerous habit and mark a serious fault in that category.

No you can't.

I imagine if you exceed the limit more than three times that'd be a serious fault, which is a fail.

Well, I recommend you learn how to not break the speed limit whilst being observant or you'll be a learner for quite some time!

Expert driver are you?

I have you ever thought they maybe capable of driving with the speed limit, without constantly checking the Speedo. However if there are loads of cams about you are going to have that little bit of doubt or worry in the back of you mind. I find when I drive on the speed controlled section of the M42 I look at my Speedo more than I normally would, despite the fact I am fully capable of maintaining a constant speed in my car.

I recon the number of cam s in blackpool is to try and get visitors to the town. As we are aware cams present no real problem to locals, as they know where they are.

Regardless, the principle is proven.
One can exceed the speed limit several times during the test and still pass.

Hmm, by one or two mph maybe, I bet if you went through 35 that'd go down as a serious fault.

I wouldn't!
There are 30mph roads that can easily safely carry higher speeds, an examiner may be sympathetic in those circumstances (especially if they have some sort of quota to meet).
Also, likely speedo over-read would put paid to using absolute speed as a measure of inappropriately high speed.

As a resident of Blackpool I can confirm that it's a nightmare!

I got myself six points at a mobile site - five days apart, got caught the second time before I even knew about the first - on one of those roads that used to have a 40 limit.

There's one just before a junction on Devonshire Road that's been there for ages - last year they installed a zebra crossing the other side of the junction. Three times now I've seen cars drive straight over the crossing despite people waiting to cross - because all their attention is on the blasted camera.

Commuting down the prom each day is a series of 27mph processions bunched together by each change of the traffic lights. As I'm on a bike I pass these corteges - ooh, pushing 33mph sometimes - then enjoy half the journey with no traffic until I meet the next bunch.

I read somewhere that Blackpool has the highest density of cameras per head anywhere in England - though I can't confirm that.

The fact is that many of us did indeed pass our test even though our speedo indicated that we had exceeded the posted speed limit. Ho hum.

i don't have a problem with Blackpool except the South beach area, i have been flashed numerous times on the big one
