:drink: :drink2:

This week :bounce: :jester:

Belgian beer!

It seems that beer in moderation has health benefits ..Apparently it contains silicon to help build strong bones and can even prevent cardiovascular disease according to the blurb in CW this week.

I will :drink: :drink2: to that ..

An excuse now to have that bottle of "Stella" with my Sunday roast  then

Thia week - pineapple. Apaprently rich in "bromotain" which helps heal minor injuries per CW. Go for fresh and not tinned or juice.

So how to enjoy this.

Well.. as per usual .. I asked the family and obtained this one from a Swiss gendarme called Axel. (H e once posted to the old CSPC site when on hols by the way.. I would not rate your chances if he copped you speeding on his patch - he is is quite a severe lad really. but fair all the same.

Anyway he - or rather his wife.. Karina .. gave me this recipe.

1.. Chop two clove garlic.

2, 2 table sponn chopped coriander

3. tbspn chopped root ginger

4. Chopped spring onions

5. 2 tbsl olive oil

6. 8 oz chopped pork (or fish .. or whatever )

7. one pineapple - cored and quartered.

(Do modify to personal tastes .. you can use quorn and fish flesh by the way.)

OK .. blend the garlic, corainder and ginger and oil and spring onions.

Use frying pan .. cook al the above for 2 minutes. Add the meat or fish flesh. Cook till brown.. Add sugar and and any sauces you desire

Allow to cool . Serve on the pineapple wedges. Truly delicious .. and please enjoy.

I try to help health as well as safety .. and yes - I have served this to self, wife and kids wjo enjoyed and scoffed to a clean plate.

The family have given me umpteen recipes involving pineapple. If any wishes to try dropped scones .. or a ham/rice/pineapple dish - then I will post these up

This week we appear to have moved on to Super Snacks . This week - the "NutriGrain Bar" which they say has a mix of simple and complex carbs - plus zinc and iron.

They say 16 minutes at 15 mph is all it takes for cyclist weighing in at 70 kg to burn off

They give it a mark of 3/5.

Meanwhile .. C+ has awoken my tastebuds to something I used to wolf down when I got home from school .. before I did that boringly awful.. time consuming/ playtime robbing homework
 Let's hear it for

Peanut Butter sandwiches :jester: :cloud9:

As we all know - we need to replace the carbohydrates after one training ride to boost up reserves for the next one. Penut butter though .. you can scoff these on rice cakes and rye crispbreads

The peanut butter per C+ contains proteins, carbs ansd some valuable fats - plus Vit E

Beware eating the whole jar at once. It's easy done as I seem to recall those butties to be very "more-ish" when I was a lad and I recall many a fight with my brothers and sisters over the last butty and last morsels in the jar

C+ gives a potted history of this meal. Apparently - the Incas of Peru pounded peanuts to a paste and used it to thicken soups and stews. It was then developed by an American doctor who found the elderly were able to digest this easily. The peanut is not a nut by the way... it is, apparently a bean - but

This week "Snack a Jack" rice cakes.

They recommend the caramel flavour. I admit to liking these and thos cheese ones. :boxedin:

51 calories. 6 minutes to burn off. Bit on the sugary side.. and I admit to preferring my wife's and my Mum's flap jacks and home made cakes anyway  Especially Wildy's doughnuts. and Krissi's rich Swiss chocolate cake.. dark Swiss chocolate .. ..blended with Yorkshire iced cream.. ..and a cake made with Swiss made cocoa powder. :cloud9:

Ooohhh!

This week "doves Farm Organic Apple and Sultana Flapjack"

CW says an ideal after-ride snack but not for elevenses due to "sugar"

They say about a 20 m ride a 15 mph to burn off the calories based on a 70 kg rider

But we make our own

Alice my wife makes a truly delicious one //

You need an orange, a lemon, and 4 oz raisins – ish. Golden syrup mmmm (Tate & Lyle - do you know I do not ever not seeing this on the larder shelf when I were a nipper. Alice – like my Mum uses 4 tablespoons and I fight with the kids as to who licks the spoon ) :cloud9:

Unsalted butter - about 6 oz

4oz soft brown sugar

Oats (organic of course) – a good half pound

4 oz plain flour and 40oz pine nuts

You need a baking tin. greaseproof paper or baking parchment .. Large saucepan, juicer mixing bowl and trusty wooden spoons.

Heat the oven – 160 degree C – Gas mark 3.

Grease your baking tin with a scrape of butter and line with the baking paper.

Grate the zest of your citrus fruits don’t use the pith

Then – use your juicer and squeeze out the juice. Our kids enjoy this task

Put this in saucepan with raisins (or sultanas) Turn heat on low and bring to simmer.

Meanwhile – measure the golden syrup into larger saucepan with the zest Use a clean finger to help in drizzle into the pan and remember to wash fingers after subsequent licking. Add the butter and brown sugar. Heat gently and stir with wooden spoon. Till butter has melted and sugar dissolved. Switch off hob.

Mix the oats, flour and pine nuts

Pour this into the pan with the syrup and melted butter and sugar. Add the juice and raisins. Mix thoroughly.

Spread into the lined tin and use oven gloves (am ‘elf and safety conscious after all) to place in oven for half our till golden brown.

After few minutes cut into required slices and just leave to cool and set. When cool enough to eat but still warm. Wolf a few down.

I tell you this is a highlight of our family kitchen “dos” :cloud9:

This recipe has been handed down to my wife Alice in the past.

Yep – am a keen cook. I enjoy cooking too. I admit I caught this from the Swiss mob and especially the Mad Cats who are probably the most family led of the bunch in reality.

The nice thing about flapjacks is that you can vary with choc chips .. any dried fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger - whatever and you still have a high boost energy snack – essential to those of us who are active in sports and even country walking. :) :) :)

This week "Go Ahead Crispy Bites"

Easy way to get carbs - but I still prefer my wife's potato cakes

Meanwhile C+ informs us that we need "iron"
as it affects stamina levels.

I think I have covered this in the CW "wonders" to date - but good sources per all my training books suggest:

tomatoes
eggs (yolks )
spinach
watercress
dried fruits - prunes and plums

broccoli/ peppers/kale and new pototoes as the iron per the C+ article rides on the back of the Vit C providers and helps us abosrb these vital nutirents

red meat - cooked rare to medium

liver, kidney, tongue and tripe

soya and pulses - kidney beans and chickpeas.
poultry

sardines/tiuna/prawns

This advice - courtesy of the cycling mags for inspiration and the family for recipes and foods to match - is not just to give a ready reference to any lurking cyclist. A healthy motorist is less likely to have an accident or incident after all

The supersnck this week is the "Eat Natural Fruit and Nut Bar" Nutty bar and takes 5 minutes to burn off the calories.

On the other hand - this week's version has music to all family ears

Chocolate is good for you!" :bounce:

Drinking chocolate - or the chocolate flavoured milk form teh supermarket

They also recommend cherries as well. It seems chocs and cherries help us get over stiffness and sores after a spirited ride

CW waxes lyrical over Food Doctors Pineapple and Banana bars

Meanwhile C+ goes for chocolate milk  and the fruity smoothy I've already posted up on this "I'll make you all healthy eaters - or die trying" thread

They have added a bit more punch to my version though - substitute the sugar with glucose for extram " oomph"

I forgot about that. My Mum used to mix glucose with water when we were kids and "off our food"

This week "Promax Meal Bar" apparently full of carbohydrates to "refuel muscles"

Oily fish - herring/sardine/mackerel/salmon/trouts is back on the menu as they keep the heart well lubricated. Per the blurb, the omega 3 is thought to block sodium and calcium currents in the heart. It seems these cause the erratic changes to heart rhythms.

My wife served up grilled salmon last night with a rather tasty salad.

Her salad?

green beens (cooked - steamed) /little gem lettuce leaves (or Romaine) , thinly sliced red onion, halved cherry tomatoes/black olives and wedge of lemon.
THREE boiled eggs and to hell with the muppets who tell me eggs ain't "balanced"

She'd tossed this in a dressing made up of

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
half teaspon Dijon mustard
crushed garlic clove.

Mix it all together with a little whisk.

She served up the salmon on a bed of this salad and arranged sliced egg quarters and lemon quarters around it.

Was rather tasty actually

Last week - chicken sandwich.

My wife serves up a particularly mean one: Wholemeal or oat bread.

Lean chicken breast placed on bread lightly buttered with either Flora/Clover or Lurpak "light spreadable". Light covering of sage and onion stuffing on one side. Then lettuce and pieces of chicken topped with a drizzle of cranberry sauce.

Another alternative - honey and mustard mix on the bread. Chikcen/bacon lettuce and a tomato slice. Mmmmmmmm!

This week? Snack on a Ryvita Goodness Cherry Bar. Rye/pumpkin mixed with dried cherries, dates and raisins.

I have tried this. They were on a promotional offer at my local Sainsbury's

They are surprisingly pleasant.

CW reckons a decent high fibre snack when out on a hard ride

Last week another Food Doctor nutty/fruity cherry bar.

This week - let's hear it  for Fudge :cloud9: I quite like the Clotted Cream variety from the West Country

In addition - CW carries a superb piece on food to put in your shopping basket with a run down of what the goodies within them do. All good stuff! and all the things I like to eat too  Red meat.. Cheese .. real ale :drink: :drink2:

In the meantime C+ tells me I need more sodium as a keen cyclist and so I am going to have the Full Monty of an Englsih Fry Up for breakfast as it advises me to have a couple of rashers of back abacon, baked beans,
and some Kraft cheese slices over an egg. also orange juice, porridge oats, crisps and a can of Heinz soup

This week's snack per CW

Dried cranberries and blueberries. It claims dried fruits will stimulate energy and anit-oxidants but also tells me not to eat too much of a good thing as too much dried fruit can give you "the runs" instead of speedy runs

This week -- Golly it takes me back to childhood

Soreen Malt Loaf

It's one like Marmite. You either love or loathe. CW suggests eating without a spread.

My Mum used to spread honey on Soreen. Light smear. Very very light smear ! My God! It's super. Honest.

Paul.. try this. It will do you good.

The Mad Doc's reply to you in Members forum..

Ted.. I think you should post this to be seen by the public

Ted told Paul he should eat his five portions of fruit/veg with oily fish.

I do enjoy cooking., I enjoy the meals I have when I visit the relatives and we all swap recipes as a family

The Mad Doc in the Members' forum told Paul to eat more oily fish and more veggies. (He did suggest cycling :P :P  )

OK ... so I have a Salmon and Avocado Salad dish which my wife has served up in the past.

Paul.. you need 1lb new potatoes. 4 samlmon steaks, 1 avocado. juice of a lemon, spinach leaves, cherry tomatoes, chopped walnuts.

Dressing - 3 tablesppons CLEAR apple juice, on teasppn balsamic vinegar and ground black pepper.

Cut the potatoe to bite size pieces. Put in saucepan. cover with cold water. Bring to boil / reduce heat... cover lid and simmer for 10 mins or so till tender. Drain .. keep warm.

Preheat grill to medium . Grill the salmon for 10 mins dependent on thickness ;) Turn them . Baste them. Remove from grill when cooked . Keep warm

While you cook potatoes .. cut the avocado into slices and coat in the lemon juice.

Toss spinach leaves /slad leaves/and cress into serving bowl .

Artrange the cherry tomatoes on each plate.

Flake the salmon aqnd divide on plates with the potatoes Sprinle the chopped walnuts over this salad.

Mix the apple juice and vinegar in a bowl.. seasojn with the peper and drizlle overe this salad.

Good for heart and health and darned tasty too

I say in members. IG cook these foods. He cook well. I think his driving skill better - but then I would say that as a woman  who enjoy cooking as much as I enjoy driving my car

We as family do laugh as IG read something in his cycling mags. Realise he eaten it in various ways "bei uns" as whole family. We get the phone call for permission to post up recipe. He not bother if he or his wife cook though

But I do like chilli as hot but versatile in many a recipe. I really do enjoy playing in my kitchen though.
