It is not for the people already on the carriageway to make room or pull over for people coming on from the slip road but I confess it is a long tme since I read it.

No - you are quite right, but survival takes precedence over law
In this case, I lifted and moved to lane 2 when I saw cars on the slip road ahead as I was concerned that my closing speed might take them by surprise. I was even prepared for the back car to then immediately pull out into lane two to pass the front car - what I had no reason to expect, but somehow "sussed" was that the front car would "amble" into lane 2 with nothing in front of it...
