I have had the same thing happen to me too Prof but according to the Highway Code I'm sure I remember it is the person joining from the slip road who is supposed to alter their speed in order to enter the dual carriageway or motorway.

It is not for the people already on the carriageway to make room or pull over for people coming on from the slip road but I confess it is a long tme since I read it.

Am I wrong?

I don't get into a rage over it and I often move over, when I can, just as a courtesy simply to help them or for the reason you did but I don't remember the code saying I should.

I still say most of my sixth sense comes from having been on motor bikes.

Instinct? I'd call it experience...

I know if I see a potentially hazardous situation materialising, I check my mirrors so I know I have an escape route somewhere...

If I see someone about to join the motorway, I'll manouvre myself so they can join unimpeded, if I can.

But, I make sure I have an escape route just in case they do just barrel into my lane...

No - you are quite right, but survival takes precedence over law ;)

In this case, I lifted and moved to lane 2 when I saw cars on the slip road ahead as I was concerned that my closing speed might take them by surprise. I was even prepared for the back car to then immediately pull out into lane two to pass the front car - what I had no reason to expect, but somehow "sussed" was that the front car would "amble" into lane 2 with nothing in front of it...

Couldn't agree more.

I'm sure nature and nurture both have a part to play - and good luck too.

When I look back to how I was in my youth I sometimes feel like the single straw left behind in a field which for some reason didn't get cut in the harvest.

Glad I made it through but when I see or hear of those who wern't so lucky I think to myself, there but for the grace of God go I...

I had a similar experience a few months ago.

I was approaching a T junction on a NSL single Carriageway road. I was travelling at approx 55-60. I saw a car at the junction waiting to emerge.

The driver of the the vehicle had not looked in my direction at all as I approached and something told me that she was going to emerge without looking so I immediately started to emergency brake. as my foot hit the brake, lo and behold, out she came. did not look in my direction at all.

I do not know what it is but quite often you can tell just what somebody is going to do before they do it
