http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21082006/323/smoking-ban-tom-jerry-britain.html

Quote:
LONDON (AFP) - Smoking scenes in "Tom and Jerry" cartoons are now banned in Britain, following a viewer's complaint to the government agency that polices the airwaves.

In one episode of the classic US cartoon series, Tom is seen smoking a roll-up cigarette in a bid to impress a female cat. In another, Tom's opponent in a tennis match was seen smoking a large cigar.

Following an investigation prompted by the anonymous viewer's complaint, regulator Ofcom said Monday that children's TV channel Boomerang has agreed to edit out scenes deemed to glamorise or condone smoking.

"We note that, in 'Tom and Jerry', smoking usually appears in a stylised manner and is frequently not condoned," said Ofcom, recalling how the cartoons were made in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when smoking was not so controversial.

"However, while we appreciate the historic integrity of the animation, the level of editorial justification required for the inclusion of smoking in such cartoons is necessarily high."

The "thought police" are on the rampage again..... :x

Just the one viewer complained, yet got their way? I think two of us should complain to get that daft decision reversed.

:| soon, we will all wear grey, everything will be grey.
Fun will taken out of the oxford english dictionary, or we may only be allowed a certain number of 'fun' units a day. Cartoons will be grey people doing grey things. We will all be happy, and no-one will be offended.

Nearly fifty years ago, I was born and grew up in a society that was fairly tolerant, fair, objective, reasonably safe, self-responsible, free and felt comfortable to be part of.

WTF HAPPENED TO IT?

Erm...actually, that one is quite valid - for the simple reason that peanuts are not nuts; they are legumes (in fact, like peas)

Anyone who thinks that this ban and bans like it are daft will probably appreciate this cartoon

http://www.fat-pie.com/thechildthatsmeltfunny.htm

It's 9 minutes long, needs flash and sound, but it is (mostly) worksafe which is a rarity in a David Firth animation :)

I'm pretty sure (unless I heard wrong) that in the new CGI based Captain Scarlet hs is "nearly indestructable", whatever that means...

One viewer complained that these scenes of smoking were not appropriate in a cartoon aimed at children.

If all it takes is one viewer to complain, I might complain that Big Brother is a wholly inappropriate program aimed at people with intelligence. For 60+ years kids have grown up with Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes etc and I don't really think many have been inspired to blow things up with TNT, hit people over the head with hammers, or throw others off cliffs etc. It's pathetic nannying at its worst.

And besides, the creators of those cartoons always maintained they were originally created for an adult audience, (usually shown to adults in cinemas before a feature film). I'll freely admit to still watching them today  - far better than any of the PC drivel cartoons made these days.

The title sequence of My Parents are Aliens shows Brian (alian Brian) with a pipe in his mouth. I'm supprised that's still in there because it serves no purpose.

I haven't seen Tom & Jerry in a while, didn't the smoking scenes usually end up with something or someone being set on fire?

WARNING-THIS POST CONTAINS GRAPHIC DETAILS OF EXTREME PERIL, NON-VEGETARIANISM AND ANTI-PC SENTIMENTS.

Have any of these stupid PC do-gooders ever seen what a cat does to a mouse it has caught? I have. Although the mouse isn't smacked in the face with a shovel, it's treated as a toy before it's swallowed whole by the preying cat.

It better stop there in case the boring PC nerds start a drive to encourage a feline healthy eating initiative like "Compulsory veganism for cats".

Well, some extreme vegetarians/vegans to put their dogs and cats on a vegetarian diet. Apparently a dog can cope with it, just about, but a cat's metabolism is different and it's a death sentence :neko:

Actually My obsevations have revealed that, after playing with the mouse untill it is exhausted, the Cat useually starts by chewing the Mouses head off! (With suitable loud crunching noises) Then it works down the body carefully exising a section of "Jerrys" innerds that I guess "Tom" doesn't like very much.

Unfortunaly as My Cat discovererd some years ago. This stratagy breaks down if you are trying to eat a full grown Squrrell! ( )
