I came across some idiot putting a anti 4x4 sticker on the car and pointed out that it was a 'working' 4x4, thier resonse was 'the website told us to look for mud' didn't seem to grasp that 4x4 shedding mud all over the country lanes of Kent wasn't a very safe or responsible approach so all 'road' vehicles had to be cleaned before leaving site.

Which is a common approach, and I think a legal requirement for many sites (possibly part of local planning). Many sites that my wife visited with her 4x4 have such a limitation, and when she was shifting spares and replacements for installation on equipment on site she often had to get the pressure washer treatment before going back onto public roads. Doesn't eliminate the need for a 4x4 when shifting a number of heavy duty springs each weighing 10kg+ along with associated M30 bolts, plus installation tools (the spanners for an M30 are 2 foot long) and you would much rather drive up to the installation than carry it all through the mud.

The anti 4x4 movement is crazy, it is sort of a middle-aged version of the ban the bomb campaign, and I personally would rather they went back to that and tell Gordon where to go with his "lets buy lots of nukes" plans. I actually supported nukes before, but these days I cannot see the point, and the hypocrisy of telling Iran that they can't have them while we go ordering more is unbelievable.

Rewolf, this is more and more common, it wasn't a planning condition for us but the Principal Contractor decided it would be sgood on safety grounds and from a PR point of view given that they wanted more pipeline projects.

As for the nukes, I heard one comment from an 'expert' on the radio, his points against were:

a, hypocrisy as you pointed out
b, from a deterence point of view, how do you deter terrorists, it would be like nuking belfast to get at the IRA, also how do you deter someone who is willing to die on the basis that when die in jihad they will go to Allah??

Gordon Brown saying I got the country into it's current economic mess so I'll get us out of it is the same as Bomber Harris nipping over to Dresden and offering to repair a few windows.

Chaos, panic and disorder - my work here is done.
