Dear users,

I was travelling along the A4041 Queslett Road East, Great Barr yesterday.

This is a dual carriageway with a 40MPH speed limit.

There is a (Gasto) type camera on the opposite carriageway facing towards me, where there are also white lines painted.

When I was approaching, the camera flashed in my direction.

There are no white lines on my side of the carriageway and no speed camera signs.

Would this have been flashing a driver on the opposite carriageway.

Just a bit concerned as I was travelling faster than 40MPH. I presume as it flashed, it is a GATSO rear facing camera, and as it relies on the road markings, then I should be OK.

Hope you can assist me, as I would like to put my mind at ease.

Regards,

L Ellis

GATSO cameras are only type approved to provide evidence for vehicles travelling away from them, though that doesn't stop the operators from setting them to fire at approaching vehicles too, presumably just out of a sense of mischief or a wish to distract their drivers.

I would have thought, as there were no lines on my carriageway, then the camera would have NO form of speed detection???

The built in radar is the means of detection, the lines are there to verify that the radar was correct, so although there was detection there would be no corroboration. I doubt very much you will hear anymore anyway, and if you do just ask for the photo and they will, unless very silly, drop the case at that point.

I noticed that the A3 Anglesea Road in Portsmouth had been recently resurfaced at the weekend. There were no loops or markings for the Truvelo.

I'm guessing that it wouldn't work, then?

I know this stretch very well. The camera regularly goes off when I'm approacing it from the other carriageway. I've never had any problems...

Oh, and :welcome:

Put your mind at ease. You were over 40, so the very worst that can happen is a customary fine and points – no need to break into a sweat about that.

In that case please give 25% of your driving licence to charity to prove you're not a hypocrite. I don't expect ANY excuses.

And as you know, Sharlie1982, that particular stretch of road is perfectly safe at speeds probably up to 70 or so...

Hope you hang around this site...

While not denying anything, I can't do it – the license is
granted to me and is not transferable to anyone else.

Seriously, though, these are the rules of the road, as they stand today.
The idea is to avoid this outcome in the first place, surely,
not to commiserate once it's happened. This is my Mojo for doing that.
All I can say is the points wear off after a while, like your ‘Final Warnings’.

Hey – here’s an idea. Why not give me 3 penalty points for
supporting speed limit enforcement - extolling others to obey the
law is against the site rules, isn’t it? That way, I’m not being a
hypocrite! You’re not having the 60 quid though.

Because your reasons for obeying the law are nothing to do with road safety.

Fair 'nuff. Anybody know the web site for "Speeders Anonymous"?
Oh, no need - it's www.safespeed.org!

Exceeding the posted limit and attempting to pervert the course of justice are two different things...

I'll be driving down passed there in about and hour and a half.....by the way my real name is Mrs Gilmour!

Its a shame people feel pressured into PTCOJ by this excessive and oppressive approach to speed enforcement. PEPIPOO should be everyone's first port of call.

I’m sorry, then, Mrs Gilmour. By the way, are you related to Gary
Gilmour, the American mass murderer who was shot by firing squad and
whose eyes were the subject of a pop-song by The Adverts? Or the string-
bending guitarist of The Pink Floyd, Dave Gilmour?

The bloke already had 6 points of purely self-inflicted pressure. The
pressure is meant to remind you to obey the limit, not to commit perjury!
People who lie should not be allowed to ignore the limit. Good luck,
though, coming up, and watch your speed around there, for goodness
sake.

I think you will find the gentleman in question was actually called Gary Gilmore...

Yes... and I expect his criminal record amounted to more than nine
points on his driving license. Which goes to show that these measly
penalty points are nothing to get het up about in the big picture.
Personally, I’d be in favour of giving only 1 (or two) points for trifling
offences, and welt speeders with a 12-point ban for bastardly deeds of
insanity.
