Well I'm a definate diesel convert. My Rover (yes I know) is faster than my mk3 golf was, it does 48mpg if I lay off the turbo, it will actually drive up the side of a house if you ask it nicely AND it sounds like a truck! What more could a girl want? (Perhapse other than an interior that's NOT beige )

Ancillary electrics that work?

Actually, ACTUALLY the only thing on mine that doesn't work is the central locking on the rear o/s door - I recon the linkage has broken coz you hear the motor whirring away and nothing happens.

Mind you, I suppose that depends on your definition of 'ancillary'

I've had two Rover 620's and my father has a ZT.

No problems in a combined 220,000 miles.

I still have the first 620 I bought, with 132,000 miles on it. Runs like a sewing machine, no wear on the interior, no rattles and everything works :) Due a timing belt soon though

The Ford on the other hand......... :x

Actually I think that is down on the list of extras as a "Longbridge Childproof lock"... :hehe:

There's nothing wrong with smaller men. I'd sonner go out for dinner with Mr Hammond than with a boring old git like you TSM.

Well said Sixy! I'm only 5' 4" but my stunning good looks more than make up for my lack of height  (That's what I keep telling Mrs. semitone anyway)

Yeah I'm with you on that, will be sticking with diesels for the forseeable future. My Pug 406 leaves most smaller petrol cars well behind when going up any kind of sharp incline, (there's always gotta be a 200+bhp BMW or Merc that spoils it though  ). It's great to drive, handles well and is an excellent motorway cruiser. 45mpg even with the turbo in full flow.

And the latest Pug 407 and Golf diesels will do 0-60 in under 8 secs so the idea of them being just economical sluggish workhorses is a pretty distant one .

Nemesis - If I get the turbo spinning early I can out accelerate quite a few smaller motors. Quite a surprise for them I can tell you!

Seriously though, you would have to show me a seriously good petrol to convince me to go back.

Semitone - you're still taller than me mate!

JT - you might well be right there! I rarely carry enough passengers to need the back doors, and even when I do I can manage to open the front door and unlock the rear door from inside. Problem is when I forget to lock it again . Mind you, who's going to break into a 10 year old rover!?

Somebody who wants your tax disk.

That is the only thing that was stolen from the one on our drive a few years back.

I'm trying to save up for a new car just now.

My heart says the V6 petrol, head says the I5 diesel.

The diesel is quicker than my Cougar, but I'll really miss the V6 soundtrack :(

Also, in the new car I want, the diesel only comes in front wheel drive, which is shite because it puts out more torque than the V6, which is 4 wheel drive. If they do finally marry the diesel to AWD then the decision will be made for me.

Right now I can't decide - economy or spirit?

I love the Jaguar V6 diesel, that's a cracking engine and doesn't sound crap like most 4 pots (including my own Rover diesel). I think that's the same engine thats in the 407 Coupe. I looked at that too, but it's such a lead sled it's not worth considering. Weighing over 2.1 tonnes it'll either handle crap, eat tyres or both.

The diesel won't put more torque at the wheels than the V6. The difference in the final drive ratio will see to that.

For me though Top Gear is still entertaining. I enjoy the banter amongst "the team". Despite enjoying cars and motoring I personally find car reviews in themselves very very boring. At least JC and co try to inject a bit of humour in them. Plus I'd much rather see a caravan being blown up then endless reviews of rather dull but reasonably priced cars.

Ah... now yer see, whilst I love to tell holidaying caravaners that I don't need my drive tarmacing or any clothes pegs/lucky heather, I got a bit bored with endless caravan carnage at the expense of 'motoring' content.

I always enjoyed the banter in previous series, but now the cars seem to come second place. Whether you agree with Clarkson's polictics or not he does review cars brilliantly. But (and I accept we're only 2 progs into the series) where are the reviews for the Alfa 159/Brera, new TT, new Lexus IS200, new Fiat Punto, new Leon, etc etc, -real cars that cost less than £75k?

I can (and I do) buy car mags, but surely the whole point of a motoring show is to show motors? -Nice camerawork, hear the engine etc. I have no problem with the 'money shot' sideways track action if it adds to the piece. But please no more dull crap about 'the adventures of Jeremy, Richard and James with a car in the distant background'...

Super cars are ace, as all the technology in them should hopefully filter down to the main stream market.

 Very nicely put! I don't care how many mpgs a diesel gets, or how they can out run some petrol cars, or that "you can hardly tell its diesel". I refuse to drive something that sounds like a bus.

Oh and yes I have driven modern diesels before anyone asks. They are still rubbish.

it's not just the tractor noises, it's the whole limited rev range, turbo lag package that gets me. It might be fine if you spend your days stuck in traffic in London but once I get to the twisty stuff or onto a track I want the car to sing - and if I was worried about mpg I'd buy a girl's car. :stirthepot:

You forgot the huge plume of black smoke when they are booted.

In the words of Clarkson regarding a diesel, since we are talking about him:- "Its all nothing, nothing, nothing, 200bhp and time for a gear change".

Apropos Top Gear

Have you noticed that James May always appears to be slightly embarrassed when speaking on the show. Being next to Clarkson must be a bit of a strain. He is the only one I rate at all. The other two are a bit Godzilla and Mickey Mouse

You're a wicked wicked man!

Personally, being a trucker bird at heart I love the noise of my car. Capri - mine doesn't smoke at all, even when booted hard at 3500rpm.

I suppose though, for me a car is just a tool. If I want to play then I use one of the bikes.

a capri's not what I'd call a girl's car, I was thinking more of the shopping trollies with less than 1.5L.

Yeah, my diesel doesn't smoke at all either, even above 4000rpm. Anyway, Jonsher, Capri - if tractors and buses were petrol-powered would you drive a diesel so as to avoid those awful petrol cars that sound like buses? :D
