Ooohhh yes, tramlines can be great fun... NOT! The A34 between the M3 and Newbury / M4 is an absolute nightmare for 'em. We often pull our boat along there on the way to and from the coast. The trailer is only about 600kg, 16' long and about 6" narrower than the tramlines... talk about wobbly! :o

Can't say I've ever had too much of a problem with them in a car though so I recon that's a pretty poor excuse for bad lane dicipline.

gotta agree, they are bad there. even an artic can be thrown around in them. been there, done it. when i worked on the rank hovis contract, i used to go up that route almost daily

Oh, so its your fault then! :P

Twister - I see your point mate, and fair comment.

I hope that we are not justifying the middle lane hogger style of driving on the grounds of poor road maintenance.... given that we know that it is major factor in tail-gating.

The one that I really cannot understand, and that you see so often is the group of two or three vehicles hogging L2, but also tail-gating each other! What is that about? Can they not see the danger, or the hypocrisy of the situation?

I have heard and read in my local paper the tramlines excuse used to justify middle lane cruising.
Bu this doesn't explain why you see middle laners on the M6 toll which is new and rarely frequented by the HGVs which create the tramlines though.

True, very true.

Spotted a new breed on M6 toll last week- the L3 hogger. Nowt on L2 and was undertaking them on L1 by about 20mph.

(This breed have been native to the Birmingham area for some time though, as only the second time I've used it!)

The best way to stop this stupidity is of course Gatsos all along the motorway, that way the I want to do 90mph care what the sped limit is, (yes there the same bunch of morons whowill compleatly ignore road works and the flashing warning lights and the brake lights of 100 cars inn front)
The other method of course is speed limiters.

How's that going to help?
Particularly with your speed limiters :o
Picture the scene:
You're in L3 of the motorway, doing exactly 70mph because your speed limiter won't let you go any faster. You can't slow down because there's someone right on your tail also doing exactly 70mph. You can't move over because there's someone next to you also doing exactly 70mph. Even if you could drop back, it wouldn't help because there's someone right up their tail as well, so there's no gap for you to pull into. And even if you did manage to move into L2, you'd have to repeat the whole exercise in order to get over into L1. And now the signs say that your exit is a half a mile ahead...

Middle-lane hoggers are the bane of my existance, man.

It's almost as if everyone else is some kind of computer-controlled robot, following pre-determined routines.

This type of driving definately encourages tailgating - indeed, sometimes to get past them, you need to be in their slipstream to build up enough speed to overtake!

My girlfriend gets very annoyed when we get stuck behind them.

She likes to go fast!

Welcome Alfonzo.

The sensible minority - I often travel at speeds of around 90mph on the motorway if conditions permit. At that speed I am well aware of what's going on 1/2mile or more ahead of me. Do you actually understand what would happen if you put gatsos on the motorway? Are you even aware of how many people were killed or seriously injured last year at Juncion 18 of the M4 Westbound when they put a gatso at the top of a crest, right next to a blind on-ramp in the middle of a set of roadworks? No, thought not.

You seem to go out of your way to miss well made and valid points.

If you are a deliberate lane hogger, you deserve to be 'corrected' by an HGV smashing you through the central reservation.

There - an emotive outburst from someone who does not buy your childish and uninformed supposition that speed restrictions are the answer to everything.

If you don't have anything relevant to say - shut up.

You're an idiot. In time, you might learn to live with it.

Botach, why one with a good depth, surely you would want TSM to hit something substantial????

Rythm Thief: "You're an idiot. In time, you might learn to live with it." Maybe not, to qoute Lazarus Long: "Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentance is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity."

Or do you prefer the Darwin Awards - I get to meet many potential canditates, it's what makes my job interesting..... :D

The more I analyse tsm's writing style, the more I suspect he is none other than John Prescott.
