my 1 liter engine and hatever tyres car is very capable of the 70mph needed on the motorway, plus another 20mph to spare, plenty fast enough, 50,000 miles in two and a half years without a breakdown, now tell me again whats the point in the big engines and sharp cornering???

Well, for one thing, if I come up behind a 40mph lorry (or one of your 'flat-caps' from another thread) on a single-carriageway, as soon as a straight bit of road with no oncoming traffic presents itself I can pass him quickly and effortlessly - whereas you will be stuck behind him for the next 100 miles or so
