There's been some comment about the choice of 'pipes' for motorbikes and their contribution to road safety.

I'd just like to point out that being deaf does not preclude someone from obtaining a driving licence.

An interesting observation.

But I think that humans are so adaptable. I'd actually expect a deaf person, on average, to make better use of vision than a non-deaf person.

The really loud ones you can feel as well as hear though. Really annoying when you're trying to sleep. :grumpy:

Pedal cyclists could aim for the same effect by training as opera singers, and blurting out the odd aria as they sliced through the traffic.

You jest but I don't recon that's as daft is it sounds. Pedal cycles are far too quiet IMO. OK so its not going to make a difference to car drivers but I recon you'd get less trouble with pedestrians if you made some noise. Even the old classic of taping a playing card to the inside of the fork leg so it rattles in the spokes will make some difference..

Deaf people also have a higher degree is sensitivity to airborne vibration (hence deaf composers) As Noise is airborne vibration. Although you may not actually hear noise you can often feel it!

No. Typically subharmonics I think. I haven't looked at this aspect of science for many years. If I remember over the weekend I'll dig out my papers (or, being lazy, more likely do a net crawl!).

Try harmonics and vibrations - typical example - chav in chavette with massive music system with dustbin size speakers ( usualy in boot) --although "music "is not usually loud enought to be heard outside car the vibreations of the bass element carry through air /ground to be felt reathjer than heard - bl***y annoying .
