Emma Davies Jones (27) and a UK Olympic hopeful is being treated for severe spinal injuries in Manchester per the headlines of tonight's Manchester paper.

Emma has commuted hundreds of times from her home in Alsager, Cheshire to train at the Manchester Velodrome. She was near her home when she was struck by a red Escort whose driver failed to stop.

Emma - who recently married a chef - came 7th in the Women's Tour de France and is in training for Melbourne's Commonwealth Games. She was taken first to MRI and then transferred to Hope Hospital in Salford where specialist Jim Leggate is treating her. The accident occurred at 10.30 am on Monday and Emma has not been able to move her legs since. It is too early at this stage to predict how quickly she will recover but I am sure all on this board will wish her well and hope she recovers from this and wins the medals she deserves from her career.

Thankfully quick thinking and alert witnesses managed to cop the registration plate and a 46 year old from Manchester's Denton area has been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries. One hopes the law will deal effectively if he is guilty of the offence.

More proof that we need more BiBs on patrol. Surely joyriders would be less inclined to to nick cars and drive dangerously if there was greater likelihood of being copped....

A woman is critically ill tonight (per "M.E.N" pool paragraph on page 2) after being struck by a Nissan car at 11.15 pm last night. The accident occurred as she was crossing Hyde Road near the junction with Hengist Street, Gorton. Anyone with any information should contact Crimestoppers.....usual number.....

Update on this story. Emma has started to rerainn and took her first steps to recovery at the local gym on the spinning machine - per Manchester paper.

I am sure our thoughts are with her and we all wish her a speedy recovery. :)

On the downside - the cyclist I reported as being the victim of road accident in Rivington - still critically ill in hopsital. Hard to say if his injuries would be lesser had he worn a helmet. However, dark clothing.... still argue you need to wear clothes whic ensure visibility from a distance - check out the Cycling forum and the CW letter

It seems to me that the joyriding problem is as bad as it ever was. The Police should start diverting some of their attention here rather than extorting money from safe drivers that are a few mph over the speed limit.

The thing is, I don't blame the Police. The Police can go to considerable time & effort and put themselves in danger to chase down a stolen car, only to watch the (usually juvenile) offender's solicitor get him off scott-free. Speed trapping "wealthy" commuters on the other hand is easy, safe, and rewarded with a 100% conviction rate.

It's the judicial system that's letting us down. How about harsher penalties for joyriders? I mean guaranteed jail. If the offenders are too young, put their parents away instead. It's about time they got tough on the REAL causes of death & destruction on our roads.

Oooh --- any excuse Emma! You are supposed to enjoy that kind of work!  I find it therapeutic to watch my wife and my lads press my uniform

Emma is currently training on the turbo and under some prssure to increase training here as she has to eliminate all risk and this includes risking another collision on the roads. :? She has every intention of making the Commonwealth Games.

Good Luck to her - sure everyone on this site wishes her a speedy reovery and success in all future events she manages to ride in.
