Und sole traders (tradesmen/delivey trucks und internet shop deliveries) will all pass the costs on to customers und will be "inflation und bust economy" economy!

Ist not a solution - it just move problem to the relocation zone anyway - see the jams on approach to out ot town shoppo- malls.

It's OK, the more local, unelected regional and central Government attempt to impose on the motorist, the more the motorist will get frustrated. It won't be long befor ethe average motorist says "to hell with it all."

Nottingham is proposing a workplace parking levy that would involve the city’s big employers paying the council up to £300 a year for individual parking spaces. It is hoped this would force companies to encourage their staff to travel to work by alternative means.


Coventry and west midlands is another area - wonder how we're expected to get to Coventry from outlying areas - and some not so outlying - only recently the train "service" to Nuneaton and Bedworth was restored - ok if you work in coventry centre - tough if you live outside coventry and work in one of the business parks -
Definitely a recipe for more people deciding that the dole is preferable to spending a high percentage of income on travel and then spending 3 hours on top getting there
Example - i live about 8 miles from Coventry centre - by car - about 20 mins. By bus/train 45 mins at least, by car , one journey, by bus/train - bus to station(bus/train) wait for bus/train - etc etc.

I've actually cycled it - possibly nearer 45 but i wasn't pushing it, the weather was very HOT . The first 5 miles added about 15 years onto my life . Cycle close to edge( of DC) and cars decide to pass within 18 in.Move to centre of road and you incur road rage.
But thats exactly what the govt want us to do - argue about which method of transport is better, whilst they conjure up absurd figures about £x per mile.

Typical government thinking -start at a high figure, set up a dutch auction on prices ,then at end of day half the figure - we all think we've got away lightly and they've got what they wanted, with agreement.

Edinburgh wanted to go down the congestion charging route and we all know what happened there.

Yes, so no other authority contemplating it will dare to have a referendum. They'll have a consultation, find out that 75% of people are against, and decide to go ahead anyway, saying that more publicity is needed about the "benefits" of the scheme.

Peter - looks like what govt is up to - looking for areas to trial charging schemes and offering cash incentives to do so .

Poses a question - if during trial the area selected gets reduced VED and or fuel prices - some system will have to be brought in to ensure that
either

all vehicles passing through that area get a reduction

or

vehicles resident in the test area get some form of id for VED and fuel .

Looks like another scheme with potential for fiddles - just thinking aloud.

but it seems to be exactly the same tactics as used by water authorities scam,
tell everyone its better and cheaper to have a water meter fitted, it saves you money ??
until about 65% have a meter , guess what ??? prices will skyrocket just like gas and electric and fuel ect

I believe Cambridge also plans to impose a congestion charge.

Of course if the council simply removed some of the unnecessary out-of-phase traffic-lights on Newmarket Road (there are at least 15 or 20 sets in a couple of miles), then much of the congestion would be reduced.

Ah - removal of extinct lights will come after congestion charge to maximise traffic flow ( like cameras stop speeding,stop accidents)

I'm not sure what alternative means are actually available...... as anyone who's been on a train or tram at 8am will know - they are already running at well over 100% of their design capacity. Last time I tried to get into Manchester before 9am on the Metrolink I ended up missing 2 trams because I physically couldn't fit on....... and that's not becuase I'm grossly obese ! The third one I had to virtually force myself on and if the contents of the tram were animals it would have been illegal.

Same goes for buses, though it would be easier to increase capacity....... but would be torturously slow, and that's assuming everone lives in the suburbs and works in the city, and works in the same place and leaves at predicatable times.

Capri - did mention the stupidity of this but someone thought it rather funny to make cheap points so i digressed.

Sorry, I didn't mean to take your post out of context I just quoted it as it wasn't the most recent posting. I certainly didn't mean to suggest you we're agreeing with it!

If you are referring to me then I fail to see how pointing out that there is a viable alternative for many is making a cheap point - especially when it can also be that fastest alternative.
