It would appear to the DofT that hundreds of people have died because they live in disadvantaged areas!! Strange!! I was led to beleive it was all about speed.

More claptrap from the gov't agencies.
No surprise there then.
Shall we make it simple for them:
"IF YOU WALK ABOUT IN THE ROAD WITHOUT LOOKING, YOU STAND A GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING RUN OVER"
My mum taught me that when I was about 4 years old.

More likely 'if I walk in the road and get run over, I can sue and make some money!'

More proof that road 'safety' and environmental policy is communism by the back door!!

Hi John,

Thanks for pointing out that website.

That memo is very badly drafted and stinks of political correctness. But
underneath all that dreadful old flannel there is something being said that
we all know is true and important.

For example :

Children from Social Class V are five times more likely than children from
Social Class I to be killed as pedestrians in road accidents. Recent
research seems to explain this by linking it to those districts, the 'areas
of social deprivation', where the poorest families live.

and :-

It is estimated that there would be 600 fewer men aged 20-64 killed on
the roads each year if only they all had the same accident probabilities as
those of their number in Social Class I.

This isn't claptrap.

Road accident casualties aren't all about speed. The motorist isn't
always to blame and there is more to Road Safety than Speed Cameras.

Local Authorities sometimes fail in their responsibilities and can contribute
to accidents by poor street-lighting, incorrect road-markings et al. If
there are any such deficiencies near where I live then I straightway
phone or e-mail the Town Hall and I talk to one of my local councillors
who lives eight doors away.

And lots of my neighbours, independently and unprompted, will be doing
the same thing. As a result things are usually sorted out pretty quickly.
It's probably the same as that where you other Forum-members live.

But I do know that in other, poorer, parts of this inner-city borough
hazardous situations can be left unattended for decades. The Town Hall
don't know about them and, for whatever reason, local residents haven't
reported them.

Of course eventually the inevitable does happen and there's a child
dead. Immediately everything that can be done is done, but it's all a bit
too late then, isn't it ?

I think that is a part of what the memo is about, but it is unnecessarily
obscure. Whoever wrote it should be sacked for murdering the English
Language but what is being said is important.

Oh definately, I agree that it has a point. What i'm saying is that there ARE other causation factors and this proves it. The trouble is, that reports like this are hidden within the depths of the DofT website.

Yes, and the major reasons for this are likely to be:
  1. Children from Class V are far more likely to be allowed to wander the streets at all hours
  2. The areas where people in Class V live are much more likely to have busy main roads running through them which children need, or want, to cross
  3. Families in Class V are much less likely to have cars that can be used to ferry children around

Much of which is likely to be due to their proclivity to:
  1. drive stolen or unlicensed vehicles, and
  2. walk around the streets when pissed
