recently I've noticed that the speed limits on roadworks have been reduced to "protect the workforce" in other words put a scamera on the road to make revenue.

One site is the A8 roadworks at Gogarburn,Edinburgh I have been pictured driving at 40mph in the "reduced 30mph zone", although the offence happened at 14.00hours there was no workers around the site at the time and the mobile speed trap still operates outside normal working hours (e.g 9-5),

I'm a 28 year old lift engineer driving since i was 17,until december 2000 I had never been even pulled over by the police, since 2000 I have been convicted of speeding 4 times and face a 5th in the near future,the first 4 convictions have all been for motorway speeding as I drive on average 30,000 miles a year

i've also noticed these 'safety for workers' notices on the M77, some of them are justified as the road narrows with adverse camber and turns but back on the main road the limit stays for miles, WHY?

Sorry to hear about your convictions as well, remember never just give in when you get nicked there is usually discrepencies in the camera/photo evidence or NIP (notice of intended prosecution).

I searched for accident stats at roadworks - the sort of thing that might be used to justify these speed limit and I've found nothing. I rather think it's all based on a badly conducted study from Texas.

Can anyone suggest any British figures? (And watch out, because the injury figures I did find included non-traffic construction accidents - obviously completely useless for our purpose.)

using the excuse that the workforce is at an added risk behind cones and reducing the limit by an extra 10mph is in my view a money making scheme.

To my recollection I can't remember reading or hearing about any roadworkers being involved in any accidents caused by speeding drivers

The heavily enforced speed limit on the M6 Thelwall (sp?) viaduct is obviously to protect the workforce.

The two carriageways are on separate bridges. The work is taking place on one with the traffic on the other. It would take an insane speed to actually jump the gap an anything other than an arcade game.

If you do get flashed it is always worth checking the validity of the signs. The M42 continues to be a a classic. Once I saw the 50 sign after the camera. Another time they have 50 limit on on one side of the carriage only (masked by HGVs in the slow lane most of the time). If you get flashed go back and do the route with spmeone to take photos of you own just in case the signs are not legal!

There was also a good one on the A6 a while ago. 2+ miles of road reduced to 30mph (was 60) with cameras left on the road after the works had completed.

As a foot note I support restrictions to protect the work force. In the US they stipulate that it is enforced when workers are present!

OK I note that Lift Engineer is referring to an offence that occured in a 40/30 zone but what about on motorways?

Anyone who has stood on the hard-shoulder of a motorway with traffic roaring past will know that the sound, vibration and pressure waves emanating from the passing traffic can be quite intense. Perhaps that's why the speed limit is reduced to, typically, 40 or 50mph?

But the good old motorist doesn't experience this from within the comfort of their little box so they can't see why the limit has been imposed. They therefore decide that because they can't see a reason for the limit, they take the executive descison to ignore it and thereby increase the stress and Health and Safety hazard to the workforce. So up go the cameras.

And yes, I know that sometimes the sites appear unworked.
