How about a plate that you have to put on your car for a specified period of time if you've been convicted of dangerous / careless driving...

A good deterrent if it leads to sufficient public ridiculing, and it will alert other drivers to be extra careful of you, as well as the police to be extra-scrutineering.

This as an alternative / addition to driving bans.

Like an L plate but a D for "Dangerous" or "Dunce"?

I think we should have a "U" plate for unlicensed or disqualified drivers, who are the people who pose most danger on the roads.

You would need a special plate for people who had been convicted of not displying their plate.

Don't we already have such a system of identification in place, called a "baseball cap"?

Ouch.

I love my baseball cap when driving against a low sun. Just minor adjustments to the tilt of your head can improve vision by keeping the sun behind the peak - and you don't have to keep taking your hands off the wheel to adjust the sun visor.

If you (all of you) have ANY doubts, just try it on an undulating road when facing a low sun.

I'm 6'3" so I find just a slight extension of my neck is always enough to put the sun above the top of the windscreen. There are some advantages to being a lanky git!

Couldn't agree more. I often wear a baseball cap for those sort of conditions... but the important thing is NOT BURBERRY . Mind you, it does tell eveyone that I'm a sucker for crap sold in tourist traps.

I don't often disagree with your views Paul, but you are way off the mark with this one. I would rather total my car against a wall (with possible death ramifications) than wear a baseball cap.

I have my own way to identify the iddiot drivers, sorry if this may offend anyone on here, there are exceptions of course, but usually the following situations cause me to be more cautious....

Small hatchback with bodykit driven by a youngster in a Burberry hat driving like a dick.

Poverty spec 1/2/3 year old model of a BMW 3 Series/Merc C Class or similar driven by 30/40 something in a shirt and tie tailgating on the motorway.

Small French hatchback with 100 teddy bears on the parcel shelf and a teenage female on board looking in the mirror (not at the road)

"Soccer Mom's" in a 4x4s or people carriers not understanding the dimensions of the car.

Old people and women manouvering in car parks.

Stereotypes I know, but no need for a sign and remember that stereotypes obviously came from somewhere........

On topic bit: I'm half expecting the techno-control-fans (Basingwerk?) to propose a RFID type solution, where a driver would activate his on-board RFID scanner to see which cars were in range. The on-board computer would then do a database lookup on the regularly-updated data (nightly bluetooth synchronisation via internet-linked home PC perhaps) and an appropriate female voice would "warn" the driver of "inexperienced driver ahead", or "car ahead failed its MOT", or "you are about to be overtaken by Mr.Jones who was late in paying his electricity bill"...
