A chap called Robin Summerhill has decided to organise a protest over the M4 speed cameras. I'm giving him a bit of a hand and have put up a web site:

http://www.m4protest.org (and http://www.m4protest.org.uk )

The protest is a slow (56mph) drive planned for Saturday 30th April. People are needed for organisation and a webmaster would be great.

Can anyone help?

Also see:

(may require pistonheads registration).

Ha, awesome, this is near me and I'm definitely up for this!

I don't know how much time I have spare as I'm in the process of starting up a hosting company (and if you want a quote Paul, I'm happy to supply as at close to cost as I can manage, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to undercut what you have now), but I'm happy to supply any technical assistance needed assuming I have spare time!

What sort of things are you expecting will need doing?

This could be a good chance for a SafeSpeed get together then, surely?

On Saturday 30 April at 10.00 am, a protest drive will take place along the M4 between Membury Services (just past the Hungerford junction 14) and junction 17 (Chippenham). The protest will highlight the issues that concern ordinary, everyday people:

I think you'll find quite a few bikers there as well as this has found its way onto a few bike forums

The local Safety Camera Highwaymen have just been on the local ITV news claiming that if this protest highlights their cause then it is good.

They have also recently cut the speed limit between Corsham and Box from 60Mph to 50 Mph why I do not know as it is a long straigh road. Hmmm More money for the coffers I suspect :(

Gosh, yes, 56 mph is near my top limit, so it won't put me out at all to take part in this! If only I lived nearer - can you do one on the A14?

I think i will add this to my journey to Wales on the 30th even though I don’t usually use the motorways when traveling on my bike.

I don't understand - what's the big deal ?
:?
I was surprised to find that they haven't been targetting motorways and to start doing so made the news. It's been standard pratice on the Welsh M4 since mobile speed cameras were invented - way before "safety" camera partnerships were formed.

The sneaky bastards have been known to put them on adjacent bridges. I presume you'll be having another protest when they discover that trick.

Don't get me wrong - I don't think cameras contribute in any way to road safety. The only thing which will decrease the horrific number of road deaths is better road design and proper and contiuous driver training.

Personally, I can't see the problem. You don't have to break the speed limit, and if you do and get fined, think of it as a voluntary contribution. You do not have to exceed the speed limit.

April 30 is not possible for me.

However, I was on the M4 on the "first" day of the recent campaign, April 6. My average speed for the M4 westbound: J14 to 18 was significantly less than 56mph due to lane hogging and tailgating by other drivers. My average speed on the return journey as far as J15 was about 57mph but I become increasingly concerned for my own safety!!!! I took an alternative, non-motorway route from J15 to the A34/A4 at Newbury. The "Camera van" was located on the A4361 Croft Road overbridge just to the west of M4 J15 in the morning. No cameras were seen during the afternoon return journey.

I am on the M4 to from J13 to Bristol tomorrow morning, April 22. I'll post here to let you all know how I get on.

I have not seen a moving or stationary Police Patrol Vehicle on that section of the M4 for some weeks; I use the road about once per week, on average. Last year, I was passed by a V70 blue/yellow check "HEDDLU" marked vehicle eastbound between J18 and 17. I estimate that it was being driven(?), without blue/red warning lights or sirens, at a speed between 90-95mph!

Kind regards to all,

ISH

I wouldn't recomend huge numbers meeting up at service stations. You will probably end up sealed in by the police and held all day as with war protesters. The police don't hesitate to shut down motorways for major accidents. So don't be surprised to find it closed off with diversions in place. They'll probably wait until you're all moving then shut the slip roads and have you all drive to London or Wales before they let you exit. You can be sure they will be planning to out wit you.

Perhaps you should get Jenny Powell in as a figurehead?
