ANOTHER speed camera has been tampered with in Bournemouth – but this time the culprits were a little less destructive.

Dorset Road Safe confirmed that the camera had not been damaged.
Firefighters from Westbourne were called at 4.05am on Monday to the camera on the A338 Wessex Way close to the County Gates roundabout.
Police said a burning tyre had been placed around the camera and the incident was being treated as arson.
Dorset has seen a spate of similar incidents in recent years.

A debate was sparked on this website, with some condemning the vandals but others questioning the need for a camera in that spot.
The number of speed cameras in Dorset has been slashed this year, with just 15 fixed units left working.
Three red light/speed on green cameras have also been removed after councils cut funding for Dorset Road Safe and the number of mobile camera sites has reduced from 33 to 28.
So it was one that was 'working' then or just a 'working possible box' ?

What difference does that make?

A common theme about where to place the cameras has emerged some time ago. Commentators say the camera is in a place where there are few accidents and injury yet some years ago they were placed there by the Highways Authorities because they saw that there was a higher than acceptable number of collisions and injuries.

Could it be that the public are seeing that where cameras are placed that accidents and injury have been reduced and remain reduced where there is a cameras? Now there's a thought.

Because I think all speed cameras should be removed that are not working or un-used as an absolute minimal, moral and decent thing to do. Removing all speed enforcement cameras off the roads would be ideal, other than those operated by Police Patrol vehicles where immediate intervention can be achieved with appropriate & proportional action.

The public are told by the likes of ACPO / SCP's etc that accidents are falling at sites, although in light of recent figures released, recent press articles have shown to the public that in fact (as we and others too, have pointed out for years) accidents can go up and down at these sites (varied length of road to speed camera site), and shows that the speed camera, had no positive effect. With some accidents happening within the 'site' area of a camera, it can be said that it can be the cause.

Not in the slightest, we have never complained about Police Patrols and their use of speed enforcement cameras where they stop people immediately and act appropriately & proportionately.

The roads would have been safer and better if speed enforcement cameras had never been allowed on the roads, the Safe Speed stance is still the same, and I still call for the removal of all off the roads.

The British public are generally a very accepting 'lot' so for regular occurrences of this kind (tyre/burning) has to show extreme dislike of something.
The beer can and leaves seems much more likely from a student source, I agree.

Speed on green? Would they be the lights that change to red if you are speeding when you approach them? Makes a mockery of the traffic light system, if you ask me. Glad they have been cut.

So can you get done for obstructing a speed camera with leaves and suchlike? Is it a criminal offence? Not that I would do such a thing. Just wondering...

Yes, I am quite sure that they will try to slap one charge or another on you if you block the action or interfered with a speed camera, in some way. I am sure that they will do everything to try and take it to Court but I would imagine that this 'Can and Leaf' offence would be an ASBO than 'vandalism' as the actual equipment was only blocked not damaged. The other incident mentioned was damage to the unit, so that is likely to receive a vandalism charge - but I am not a lawyer.

Yes if you travel at the speed limit the aim is that you will 'catch the lights', but they obviously have to change at some point. Brois J is keen on them for London but London needs a proper through put input!

Obscuring the lens could earn you a ban from driving IIRC.
Prompted me to think though...
If you are speeding, but slow down for a speed camera... then speed back up again, isn't that obstructing the course of justice...? :lol:

It must be just as serious as the man who waved a warning placard, and was banned from driving for that very serious offence - actually persuading motorists to slow down, instead of just punishing them for it? :whome:

I am not keen on these speed on green systems. And Boris is a bit of a muppet if you ask me.

As for people getting nicked for persuading motirists to slow down, I know the courts even take flashing seriously. Surely this is encouraging people to adhere to the speed limit? Makes no sense to me.

Yes. I wonder who will be the first to get done for warning drivers behind of a speed trap/camera by use of his brake lights?

You are intefering with the collection of speed taxes there, me old son. Try using engine braking. Less of a giveaway.
