Meanwhile, again from the back of the Orange car, their son says...

"I spy with my little eye something beginning with W"

The weather is perfect to get out doors, and with boating season upon us many will be taking to the water for some fun in the sun.
But not knowing the boating "rules of the road" can be dangerous. Today, local experts got together at the Isle of Hope marina for a discussion on safety and maritime law.
They say accident prevention is a breeze if you follow some simple rules and are aware of your surroundings.

Ed Robb is with Bouhan, Williams & Levy. He concentrates on Maritime and Transportation Law.
“If you violate the ‘rules of the road’, then there is a presumption, that for example if you are in an accident, then you are at fault. You have a responsibility under those circumstances to prove that your actions could not have been a contributing factor in the collision.”

Kent Shockey is a 25 year member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
“There are two big requirements. You are supposed to have a look out and you are supposed to maintain a safe speed. If you do both of those, and you are not under the influence of alcohol, then there is a pretty good chance you will have a safe, fun day out on the water.”
Boating safety classes are available though the US Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The rules for boating and road are now published as one document. :)

Sharron: “On no, it’s coming through the doors now”

Derek: “Well at least it won’t matter if we pee ourselves”

Later on...

Sharron: “I can’t see where the peddles are in all this water”

Derek: “Yes, and that’s not the gear lever you’re holding either” :P
