It makes me laugh when I see a building site and some one is craning a 3 tonne concrete pipe into a trench with a 20 tonne excavator, and the guy in the trench has a hard hat on. Yer, that's help if the chain breaks

And on some site where there's no risk to the head , nothing to fall ( apart from a bit of bird sh***)- we see all sort of HSE advisories being implemented .

Look at the site advice on building sites - you would appear to need safety boots (with steel caps)(in case something falls on your toes), a hard hat ,in case something not hard enough to kill you lands on you head , and a hi viz jacket ,in case they can't see you . And ,oh - you'll need ear defenders ( so you can't be deafened ,or hear the machine that will run you down) ,and eye protection , on case you get shi*e by a bird blinds
you .

But then - something could fall on your foot , where no protection was present . Something could fall on your back, not protected by hat , the driver might not see you ( dazzled by the sea of hi viz jackets) ,and whilst wearing your ear protection ,you might not hear the danger ,or see it as the goggles are restrictive in viewing area .

I don't think the hard hat worn by the guy in the trench is there to protect him from being crushed by the pipe, and more than a cycle helmet is there to protect the rider's head being run over. It's there to protect against all the other little knocks that could do damage!

Robin - my post was a sarcastic take on the present state of HSE regs in the UK- now as a Helicopter pilot- would you consider your helmet to protect you for a major crash

What injuries do they get when they crash in the Tour De France? They have some big crashes too.

Broken collar bones and "road rash" are the most common injuries amongst racing cyclists. And sore bums :)

Bike helmets just sit on the top of the head and are held on with a strap. But it looks to me like they are easily knocked off :?

If they are correctly fitted the straps are very good at keeping the helmet in place.

That, of course, is why there are very strict standards for the construction and use of such chains. Their helmets are intended and specified to protect against the much more likely event of a hammer or scaffolding clamp being dropped.

I take it from that that you are not in favour of the compulsory use of industrial safety equipment :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D . What would your be your preferred garb when working on a building site :? :? :? :? :?

Yes, and to proven effect.

Some proper fitting trousers which don’t show the crack of my a**e would be a good start IMO. :D

I was thinking along the same lines as Botach. I would have thought there aren’t very many moderate crashes in a helicopter where the helmet makes the difference between life and death, but I know you know more about this than just about anyone else here. ;)

I went on a geology field trip in the Mendips when at uni, and we had to wear hard hats at all times.

When standing in a field, on the Clifton Suspension Bridge, in Cheddar Gorge, on a beach near Portishead.

At all times surrounded by the general public.

Pointless.

In that case, the hard hat was to protect the uni from the HSE ton of bricks. :D

I personally know at least a dozen people who have been spared death or serious injury because of them.
