The ones on the A505 are deinitely gatso, and definitely have flash units inbuilt, which means they are not using Ka band doppler radar to check speed.

I don't understand how you concluded that; can you explain?

They also have the same marks on the road that were there when they were the old units.
The buried sensors ...

What is the speed limit at that area? Could the buried sensors you've seen be part of an induction loop to aid discrimination between vehicle classes and appropriate limits? (I'm quite sure such systems do exist).

I don't see the relevance of Truvelo data for Gatso systems.

Another possible contribution that might have something to do with all this?

Another onging thought is here from Oct 06
Quote:
Cheap camera could multiply road speed traps within months
By David Millward, Transport Correspondent
Published: 12:01AM BST 10 Oct 2006

A new generation of speed cameras capable of calculating how fast a car has been travelling over any distance could be on the roads within months.

The Spike system differs from both the Gatso cameras which flash cars as they go past and the costly Specs devices which are normally used to judge drivers' speed over a prolonged stretch of road.

Specs (Speed Check Enforcement System) costs several hundred thousand pounds, which has deterred some safety camera partnerships.

The alternative system, which has been submitted to the Home Office for approval, costs around £20,000. It is also portable, which would allow the cameras to be shifted to newly identified accident blackspots or road works. If approved, it could lead to the number of average speed safety camera systems soaring from the 14 in operation at present.
The new camera has been produced by Pips Technology, of Eastleigh, Hants, which already supplies digital number plate recognition cameras to a number of police forces.

Andrew Howard, the head of road safety at the AA Motoring Trust, said: "The great advantage with these cameras is that you can use them for long, nasty, curly stretches of road, rather than picking up motorists at odd points.
"They are particularly good on single carriageway roads, where people tend to go too fast and drive into trees or become involved in overtaking accidents. So these cameras can cut down on a lot of this behaviour."

The weakness of the average speed cameras was when a stretch of road was long enough for people to turn off, or join, at some point between the two cameras.

Paul Smith, a campaigner against speed cameras, said: "Oh dear, at that sort of price, it will lead to a proliferation which will be horrifying.
"This will lead to people looking at their speedometers every couple of seconds, rather than looking at the road.
"It is the massively expensive cost of the Specs system that has stopped it being introduced more widely.
"Speed cameras are greatly destructive and ones which take an average are even more so."

I would consider piezo sensors as being pressure sensors personally, since their deformation is due to the pressure on the road. If they are not then I would be interested to hear the nuance of definition which meant they were not so.

I am under the impression that GATSO cameras, digital and otherwise, still use radar for speed measurement. Truvelo cameras do not, nor ever have as far as I am aware. Gatsometer BV produce some systems which do not use radar, do we have any evidence that these are being installed in formerly radar-equipped housings?

Managed to get parked across from nearest gatso with addition ,today .Bearing in mind some of the warnings -sat in car with window down - this is a better pic ( complete with passing car) of the so called flash unit

Image

Looks like something Johnny 5 would have on shoulder - and the distance from the start marker to this is approx 2.8 road markings .

Then again ,Draco , I could just be accused of being cynical over Iraq ,which had a tyrannical government guilty of racial genocide and oil -so UK & USA INC rushed in , knowing that in this sort of terrain military might should overcome Guerilla tactics in the first instance .Then we see a lot of shouting & hot air over Zimbabwe ,same sort of dictator, same subjugation of one race ,no oil ,and a terrain very similar to Vietnam , but no action .( Message to Iran - before you get started on the nuclear program - re instate the jungle :D :D )

Hello again!!!! I said last month I would make a FOI request to find out what this device is and I now have the Home Office reply.

The letter has been personally signed by the head of the Home Office Scientific Development Branch and while I wont reproduce everything verbatim, this is the gist of his answers to various questions I posed:

The device is a Gatsometer Type 24 IDC, it uses radar to enforce speed limits.

The camera head is approved for use in fields of up to 10 V/m.(I don't really understand this, what is V/m??)

(Also I note he refers to a "camera head", yet the device does not apparently take pictures!!)

I also mentioned that the ACPO Code says that any reconfiguration to a fixed camera site requires a recommissioning procedure for the site,
and does the erection of this device count as a reconfiguration?
He says that there is no H/Office recommissioning requirement, that is a matter for the Police Force operating the device.

I asked if speeding allegations are null and void unless the site is recommissioned, he stated that's a matter for the police.

Well, the questions I asked have been precisely answered, yet I still feel not much further on! I still don't know why there is a need to erect this auxilliary(??) device at the Gatso site. Is the radar function of the old camera no longer working???? Why put this there??
Anyone have any further ideas or info?

I have just had a further thought. This device points at the road at a somewhat strange angle. The old Gatso had an angle of 20 degrees to the road(?) and then performed a cosine correction function. Surely this device requires major cosine correction, given it's angle?

I would point out I have no scientific or engineering qualifications and there are people better qualified than me to answer these questions. I feel I'm kind of chipping away at the edges of this subject, that I'm getting there, but by slow degrees!!!! It's frustrating but I seek a full answer to all the ins and outs of this device. Help!!!!

Thanks for giving the responses on the forum zulu.

v/m = "Volts per meter" - a measurement of electric field strength. A higher number means a more powerful field (like when being closer to a radio transmitter).
This is the standard characteristic used to determine/describe a unit’s immunity to radio frequencies.
10 V/M is a nominal level for most “domestic/light industrial” level approvals – meaning it has the same (or possibly a greater) level of immunity as other gadgets you own.

Not so unless it is, in itself, a speed measurement device. A mere flash of simple image recorder needs no such compensation.

Thanks for chasing this up.

The police.homeoffice.gov.uk (PDF) pages can no longer be found, but Google seems to have kept a cached HTML copy if you search for "Gatsometer Type 24 IDC"

The Gatsometer Type 24IDC is a digital version of their wet-film radar camera equipment and it has an auxiliary flash unit; this I mentioned some months ago.

Zulu, you need to learn to ask the right questions if you want the right answer...the right one having been provided by me some time ago.

He is free her to ask any question any way that he likes. You have no authority whatsoever, to tell posters here how to behave.
What about useful links to your references to earlier posts to help direct us all to your prior answers ?

Media awakens to Spike camera testing
Article by: Darren Griffin - Date: 20 Apr 2010
pocketgpsworld.com Here
Both the Daily Mail and The Independent have published stories covering the Spike Speed Camera system which is currently on trial at a number of locations.

Spike is not a new system. Manufactured by Pips Technology who are based in Eastleigh near Southampton, it has already seen use as part of the London Congestion Charge scheme and works in much the same way as Speed Check Services SPECS system.

Spike consists of a camera with infra-red illuminator and the ability to read vehicle number plates (ANPR). By comparing the time taken for a vehicle to pass between two Spike cameras, the distance between which is known, allows the system to calculate a vehicles average speed between those locations.

However, Spike does not yet have the necessary approval for use as a speed measurement system and the current trials will no doubt be in place as a pre-cursor to seeking just that.

The beauty of Spike as far as those who are responsible for purchasing and installing such systems are concerned is cost. Spike is a much cheaper system than SPECS and instead of requiring expensive cabling to connect it to other cameras in a network, it relies on GSM, GPRS or WLAN instead making deployment faster, simpler and cheaper.

Quite what The Independent were thinking of when they printed "New speed cameras trap motorists from space" is anyone's guess but it sure makes for an attention grabbing headline.

For subscribers to our speed camera database you will wish to know that we are collating the locations of these cameras but they will not be published as part of the live database until they receive type approval and become active enforcement cameras. If you see them though, please do report them.

Sort of like the answers I got when I asked your oppos in Warks about the attachments to several Gatso's - first reply was that it was something to do eith flash ,second reply when asked about the aerial - it may/may not transmit .Only when cornered withan FOI request did they come clean .Were they playinf silly b's -the fact that they did tell me what I wanted to know on FOI suggest exactly that. I'd go as far as to say that we could erect a statue to the value of SCP in road safety ,if we could determine exactly how much value to place on it ( I personally would be using a very small reading micrometer -somewhere about 5 microns :D ).Then we'd have to consider whether to place it next to George Washington ( who never told a lie ) ,or next to that of LLoyd George ( who was reputed never to tell the truth ) since the difference to you lot is a matter of spin-something we could measure in light years :D .

Botach, i would say that the easy answer to this is, because you and I are both engineeers, where as greenshed is no where near to being such, is forget any answer he gives you... he really doesn't have a clue .....

Hang on....my ribs have just popped out.

Let's see your engineering explanation of the device, the camera and the mysterious little aerial. I still see closed thinking and not the correct deduction even after you have had the correct explanation, minus the aerial, that is providing the most amusement and illustration of your collective lack of deductive ability.

Keep going boys and girls; lets see how you do in another week. :loco:
