Plymouth could get a £70,000 camera car to help catch drivers breaking the law and ignoring parking restrictions.

A report to the city council says the Toyota Aygo, fitted with a rooftop camera, would generate £50,000 a year in penalties.

The camera car has been tested for the past three months with Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership, which operates static camera sites.

The Aygo follows a similar initiative which began in Manchester in 2009.
The Aygo's cameras, operated by a police traffic officer, will also be looking out for drivers using mobile phones, jumping red lights, speeding, driving in bus lanes, wearing no seatbelts and parking illegally.

The small car is unmarked apart from safety camera partnership stickers on the doors.

So I guess this will create ever more paranoia of all small silver cars especially with so little markings ?
I would far rather the TrafPol was in a 'normal' well marked police vehicle and stopping people appropriately than purely for reaching targets.
I wonder if this is the cheap, paid for alternative, that the CPS have come up with, to then be able to state that more police are back on the beat! The fact that the camera they use is paying their fee helps with what exactly apart from budgets ?
Camera Funded Policing - talk about do things backwards !
Waste of a fully trained traffic officer - or is it ? Are they not just a glorified traffic warden, the blur is growing wider between all road enforcement 'officers' these days ... :bluelight:
It would be interesting to see what qualifications and experience they have had to have to operate these motorised 'piggy banks' ?
Whilst I do not object to fully qualified Officers Patrolling the streets - this speaks of hide and seek. The public need to see officers on the street and deter crime from happening, not hide in wait until it is committed and then 'pounce'. We need to have Police be pro-active and encourage the right behaviours in the first place.
I wonder how long before they start to get commission from the tickets ? What a repulsive way to Police. This will do nothing to help improve Police / public relationships.

How do you get a Toyota Aygo to cost £70k. The bit about it generating £50k a year in fines rather reflects their motives.

I guess my quoting didn't work

I guess the fill it with various over the top and expensive camera equipment, then add on all the shift workers and all their training and all the overheads they cost you too, like heat and light, and it isn't going to before you have a few £10K adding up.

- My comment about the silver cars is that if they are to only use this colour then it will create an over emphasis on silver coloured cars as potential Police vehicles, and since silver was the most popular coloured UK car then it might lead to other motorists being concerned over it being a cop car and booking them for misdemeanor/s. I do agree that Police are excellent on the streets as a deterrent but this is a cop with a spycam ready to leap out and book, not to decor or prevent - perhaps the Police will use good judgment - I can but hope. :)

I was mislead by the topic title - I thought it said BAD DRIVERS - not careless parkers!

Will it catch DWDC&A, etc.? :wine:

No I thought not! :sublurking:

On one of the images where a previous 'Scam Cart' has been 'deployed' it was on yellow lines but in fact the yellow lines are so bad that they are no longer legal !
It is all very off balance, huge investment in enforcement yet next to nothing on education and guidance or prevention. Shiny new expensive cars sitting on broken lines and driving around on broken damaged roads, it is a disgrace.

How long before paranoia turns into total dis-interest and people give up caring, just accept all the point and fines, and end up often behind bars for non-payment ? How long before we are paying extra insurance to cover chauffeur drivers ? These services have been around for a while, but how long before they become common? Altering the heart of the driving culture is likely to have many far reaching consequences.

Doing a bit of maths , £70k times ( say ) 10 is £700K - how many man years of trafpol plus car would this pay for .( Whoops -forgot , this £700k will reap massive dividends -trafpol none -so no argument ) -it's policing by accountants ,not by safety or prevention .

It seems generating £50k is the main objective . Safety takes a back seat again.

A friend of mine was running late in dropping her child off at school. She parked outside the gates on double yellows to let her child out then drove off.

She noticed one of these camera cars a bit further up the road and a couple of days later she got a ticket for parking on double yellows.

What made her incandescent with rage was that the car that took her picture was parked on the same yellow lines she was fined on.

The are not about safety, they are solely about revenue.
