Sussex Police cancel 200 speeding tickets

A total of £12,000 will be returned to motorists

Police have been forced to cancel about 200 speeding tickets after it emerged the camera used to catch motorists was not authorised by the government.

Sussex Police is revoking the tickets because the device did not have Home Office approval.

A total of £12,000 will be refunded and the penalty points scrapped.

Supt Steve Barry said a "simple mistake" had led to officers not getting the camera signed off correctly.

The Concept Two camera was used by officers across the county for about six weeks.

Supt Barry, the head of road policing, said: "It's quite a simple mistake that's been made.

"It was a signature from the minister that had not been received.

"It does not mitigate the fact that the people concerned were probably speeding but we want the public to have absolute faith in speed enforcement policing.

"The reality is that speed does kill and it's a real significant factor in the number of people who are killed or seriously injured on the roads."
