Apart from most of the above points, I would have rung them today to confirm and got the name and dept of person spoken to.
I too doubt very much that you would receive a fine. You have clear proof of garage evidence and unable to return home due to the fault. You are doing all you can reasonably be expected to do and have your friend help you obtain the info. (I now carry all the various numbers with me for just this problem when I knew I would be away when it was due and bought it online - BUT if you try to complete the online form, you can then let them know that you have tried but couldn't complete due to not having the right number - this at least helps show your good intentions too, but no more !
On another point you could drive the car by taking the cap off the water reservoir but you will need to stop frequently and fill up with warm water which may also mean that you will need to sit and wait for the engine to cool. Bad to mix hot engine with old water - can result in a cracked head. However if you have a modern car this might not be advisable - and you also had a long way to travel.
Having an over hot engine can also crack the head, so very wise to stop and have it fixed.
