Just a couple of years ago I would have agreed with you botach, maybe I am getting older but I find holding my right foot in near enough the same position for over an hour makes my calf ache and even start to cramp sometimes.

Sorry -mate ,I'm probaly one of the elder members round here , been on the roads a few years short of my half centuary ,and up till recently a trip from near Big Tone to 60 miles short of SS2 would have been a routine trip ,done in about eight hours (fastest was six and a half - when my dad was taken ill),and the only problem I've had was a sore bum .Trick is to vary speed on motorways - and then on normal S/C - normal driving stops any part of your body getting into the same position .

Yes, and then you get a ticket in the post. The only way to vary your speed these days is to go slower, causing aggrivation and meaning even more time spent driving.
With this planned SPECS3 rollout cruise control is going to become a necessity.

Good point, maybe it is the scams giving me cramp not age.

botach - I have always preferred the A1 for north/south trips as the roundabouts break up the run, of course they have turned a lot of them into motorway style junctions over the last few years. The Impreza does not help tbh as at 70/80 mph the throttle is very sensitive and you have to hold the weight of your foot off it rather than rest against the spring or you will accelerate quite a lot very easily. There is very little difference in throttle position between 60 and 80 at cruise (almost no difference in fuel consumption either), the only way any significant foot movement is needed is when accelerating quite rapidly and doing that just to exercise my leg would be a bit expensive in fuel. It does not have cruise control anyway :)

Strange coincidence -my sister lives just south of the Medway and her preference is that route .Years ago we worked in London ,and for some strange reason we always used the M1 /A66/A74 - but that was in the days when the M1 ended about a bit further north than now :) ,and it was a long way from Scotch Corner to the M1 :)
For me ,when I went north , the M6 is only a few miles away -then it's straight up the west coast .
The A1 from Peterboro to Doncaster is a nice trip ,but a long detour for me .
