The £15 is not a fee to a rescue centre - the process is more like registering a car to a new owner -the fee is paid to the kennel club administrators of the system .It's possible that charities like PDSA do operate IFa system whereby the fees are lower.Mine was from a breed rescue society and to me re-registration is as much a commitment to the dog as ensuring that the jabs are up to date .

Back to the original topic -as said it's got a comparison with vehicle registration . If ( more like IF) the idea could be 100% then at least those owners failing to clean up after their pets could be identified ( like cars ,no clean up ,possibly then the dog isn't immunized or worse still wormed ).But then like hundreds of dog owners ,I'd like to see some restriction on cats( heavy wight attached to neck ( ) - their little offerings are as dangerous to eyesight ( possibly more so as their mess is more often than not buried),but I'd suggest that that fact is kept suppressed by those in Town Halls .

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 has required that a dog when in a public place must wear a tag with the owners name and address on it. For most people this has become a name and a phone number their own, their vets or even a company who will then put finder in touch with owner if Fido has become lost.

A micro chip is a more up to date way of doing this without the obvious risks of having your personal details on displya ableit on a small tag on Fido's collar.

If dog is unidentifiable and gets lost how is Fido to be reunited with owner. Remember since the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 the police now have no responsibility for stray dogs.So no good going to the local cop shop and asking if Fido has been handed in.

Very recently become a dog owner again ,so although dog microchipped ,wondered what should be on tag etc on dogs collar .So first port of call was our local council dog warden service -who admitted that they didn't have the answer offhand as our council is not at present enforcing the dog tag legislation .(Apparently it is up to the individual council) .So that's the first problem - if I go out of this council's jurisdiction I could be open to failure to have a tag on my dog , but they did come up with answers to my question ( found on the web ,believe it or not ) .

EDIT -

Just re read Ian's post - again a quote from one of our council officials when I asked about a dog that was roaming "we don't do anything about stray dogs -that's a job for the RSPCA" - strangely enough I recounted this to our warden .She said something -mostly unprintable .

Then again - looking at the post title -
