They rise fast, very. From fully retracted to fully deployed in [in many cases] under 4 seconds.

Other loops such as approach loops are installed to send information to the system, this is dependant on the way the client wants the system to operate.

At level crossings you see the gate coming down; no other warning can be as obvious as that. I've seen amber/red gamblers, but I've never seen a gate gambler.

True, but you can't have both otherwise you're back at square 1. The rise must be quick, immediate and obvious to the driver.

At low speeds, a sensible gap can be quite small:
Total stopping distance at 25mph = 17m, for which a gap of > 1.5 seconds is required to ensure non-contact (assuming a sudden brick wall, 0.67s, 0.67G).

At least two of the drivers we see on the video have purposfully not left a gap in front because they think they can beat the bollard.

Perhaps the buses should stop straight after they pass the bollard with no room behind them whilst the bollard raises.

Bit of a pain to have to do this because of a few idiots, but pretty much everything boring we have to do in life is down to idiotic and selfish behaviour of a small minority.

as vindictive bollards seam acceptable to some why not install a colt 45 and try to shoot out the sump of each tailgating vehicle? Safety is not important if you are a council.

The idea of "state indicators" (rising/falling/both) seems good: Until.....

Quote:
2.2.1 Rising bollard systems should have a method of directing authorised users
when to proceed when negotiating a bollard controlled access point. It is
recommended that all bollard installations provide "indicators" advising
authorised road users of the bollard status i.e. whether the bollard is fully
retracted, fully raised or in the process of lowering or raising (see section 5:
Basic System Components and Section 10: Signing). ****However, no indicators
for this use are prescribed in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General
Directions 2001***** Therefore, if indicators are used, they require authorisation by
the Department for Transport or by the appropriate national authority

Oh well...

Sort of on topic I hope… I sometimes wonder if there’s not something in our psyche which just hates being told what to do even if it’s for our own good. I was behind a lorry this morning and saw a sign on the rear which I hadn’t seen before on any other HGV. What you can’t see from it was what happened a moment before when a cyclist went on the inside as the lorry was, (you guessed it), making a left turn….
