Hardly surprising actually, and I doubt it could happen here - could it?

Indian officials ban school motorcycle stunts

Education authorities in India have banned pupils from taking part in death-defying motorcycle stunt shows.

The clampdown came after a display at a school in the state of Tamil Nadu included a motorcyclist putting a plank over a young girl and driving over her, according to the Daily Telegraph.

After the incident, on 15 July, senior official Mr K Devarajan confirmed that officials had sent notices to 50,000 schools warning against events that include "risky stunts".

He added that parents had pressured the school into holding the motorcycle show to celebrate the centenary of K Kamaraj, who founded modern education in the state.

The parents also reassured teachers that their children were experienced in martial arts, and were keen to show off their offspring's skills.

One of the parents told a local newspaper that the tough youngsters were keen to take part, and had volunteered to lie in the path of the motorcycle.

Indian schools often hold displays of their pupil's prowess in the martial arts to honour visiting celebrities.

In a similar vein...

I'm doing a little part time work with a friend that runs a bushcraft and survival school, to get publicity I've been doing firelighting demonstrations at militaria fairs, country fairs etc.

The local Blacks store run a tent show in the town centre, so I approached them about doing displays, once they understood what I was doing they were more than happy to have me there, but as it was on council property I would have to speak to the local council and get their permision. Initially they refused on health & safety grounds that providing a risk assessment and method statement for such a dangerous activity would be very hard.

No worries says me, I do H&S for a living.

U turn so quick it nearly broke something, now the reason given was that it would encourage kids to light fires in local parks.

Really, kids are already doing that with about 5l of petrol, they really can't be faffed to light a fire the way I would be demonstrating it - Bow Drill (rubbing two sticks together) cramp balls (a type of fungi) or silver birch bark.

Complete ban.

So I suggested doing some wood carving instead.

What would you be carving with?

The large stuff with an axe, the small stuff with a bushcraft knife.

No we can't have offensive weapons in a public place.

Not a problem, I've done this before and as long as I inform Essex Police a week before they are very accomodating (hell we've run bushcraft courses for some PCs and they know me by sight).

No response, they would not reply to me till after the tent show, stating that it was not something they wished to be associated with.

Idiots :furious: :furious:

Since when has an axe been classified, per se. as an offensive weapon?
Mind you a surprising number of people, including security guards, have warned me that carrying a Swiss Army Knife (7cm blade) is illegal

They failed to see that I would come under one of the exemptions (ie work related).

Talking to a Pagan friend who follows the 'Nordic' way an axe isn't classed as weapon it is classed as a religious icon and an everyday tool. :D

On our recent holiday to France (we went to La Rochelle area this time und it was :cloud9: und we also take extra week to visit Arizona which ist also very pleasant - to my relief und I rather like my new kitchen too :hehe: all of them  if you understand me here :hehe:)

Anyway - on recent holidays one thing struck us. Neither area seemed over-concerned by health und safety. In La Rochelle for example - we visit an acquarium attraction und visitors could also climb to some view point which offer panoramic views. No fences .. safety nets und small kids were roaming around safely enough but with parents keeping watchful eyes und alerting to the obvious dangers which these children also quite obviously to the observer recognised for themselves

In the UK? Well kids are not allowed to play tiggy tag chase lest they trip und graze a knee. :banghead: Our kids as a "generalised body"? As a result? Perhaps the most molly coddled in EU - definitely the most stupidly accident prone - (per the stats ) und for all this molly coddling - highest drug/booze addicts und often child parents in Western part of globe. In short - by over-protecting from risk - they are unable to assess any risk accurately as a result. We reap what we sow  Both on the roads und in domicile

Before the Good Friday Agreement carrying a hurley around N. Ireland could land you in bother.
