Very interesting figures! I was wondering if anyone could do an average for, say, 1945-1955 and 1995-2005, and are there any corresponding facts about numbers of cars/annual milage?

Is there a web site with these stats?

It's all there somewhere on the DfT transport statistics site:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/da ... lications/

This is the key table you want:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/statistics/da ... ype182.pdf

Annual fatalities reached a peak of 7985 in 1966. The casualty rate per 100 billion vehicle kilometres is now less than a fifth of what it was in 1950, so there has been a dramatic improvement.

Very interesting statistics, done some graphs but need some time to do some full number crunching, but generally it seems that things are far better than the 1950's as you say.

I don't know what all the fuss is about - specially if you drive between 4 and 6am.
