We have not the staff nor the time nor the desire to live that long to enforce it all/

:roll;

But what about electric cars .. they make a huger carbon footrpint in charging them up.

I sweat a lot when cycling.. Oh dear .. now I'll get fined for me steaming pedals and hot lycra!

At least I eat meat and not lentils.. Damn ,, forgot .. cows .fart .. . hot air.. :hehe: Hang on.. someone said we should give up Yorkshire Puds and the trimmings. ..

Nowt sacred then. Roll on asterroid on collision course then.

Life is just not worth living without Yorkshire Puds.. onion gravy and a couple of slices of beef. :cloud9: Bum.. I'm hungry now.. :hehe: .

Fear not .. won't work. We don't have the staff and as credit crunch crisps up - I doubt we'll have the cars or the bicycles

Since I am not a 'trucker', I am not aware of the details, but auxiliary devices which used to require operation of the main engine are now powered otherwise. (Should it really be necessary to idle an engine capable of producing 1000 to 2500 lbft of torque just to operate a TV and a cabin heater?)
(My educated guess: smaller, more efficient auxiliary engines.)

a lot of items are run from the batteries which obviously require the engine to create the power but things like air con is now available using other methods to allow it to run all night without draining the batteries. unfortunately not all solutions are readily available and you can find yourself stuck in a corner. for example parking up at night. do you leave your sidelights on and risk flattening the batteries or switch them off and risk a fine for failing to illuminate your vehicle? option 3 of course would be run the engine every few hours but that would be flouting the laws on rest periods as it would be work so you would get done for that too

I'd be interested to know about systems for keeping aircon working while the engine's not running - that could be useful for something we're working on at present!

Not necessarily! In fact, I'm slowly becoming a bit of a "plug-in electric" convert! (That's not the same as "evangelist", by the way! They're still not really my cup of tea but I don't hate them as much as I did)!

Mains electricity as it comes out of your wall seems to generate about half a kilo of CO2 per kilowatt hour. We've had an electric vehicle do more miles per kilo of CO2 than it's equivalent diesel engined model. The difference isn't great and I'll be the first to admit that the main cause of the improvement is the fact that the electric version is dog-slow!

HOWEVER...

It gets charged overnight. Our power stations are (mostly) pretty hard to turn on and off so during the night they waste HUGE amounts of energy just dumping heat straight into the cooling towers. It's this energy that is being used by a plug-in electric vehicle being charged overnight! Obviously, if everyone went over the plug-in electrics, this situation would change but at present I think we have quite a lot of spare night time capacity in the grid that just gets wasted anyway.

From what I've read these stop-start systems don't operate if there's any appreciable load on the engine, so if aircon was running the engine probably wouldn't cut out.

In fact I have my suspicions it is largely a method of getting lower official CO2 emissions figures that in real-world driving is rarely used. In fact the driver can manually disable it anyway.

For three or four years, the North American Honda Accord Hybrid came standard with a 2ndary electrically driven A/C compressor.
Patrick Bedard, of Car & Driver, wrote:
During our summer test motoring, the A/C was always running. The belt-drive compressor (75cc displacement) stops with the engine, but the electric compressor (15cc) maintains cabin coolness and keeps the Accord alive with enough vibration that you could think — in a Lexus anyway — the engine were still idling.
Electric drive has smaller losses than belt drive, too.
John Phillips, of Car & Driver, wrote:
In previous hybrids I've sampled, the engines could rarely sustain max compressor and max fan speed in auto-stop mode, so the thing continued to idle through even the briefest traffic lights, working counter to the whole fuel-saving exercise. But not this baby. Even when the tach reads "0," a cool northeasterly blows relentlessly ... Big surprise that Honda figured it out first, right?
The Rush wrote:
(The car was discontinued for two reasons:
a) the vast majority of hybrid buyers prefer a more conspicuous and ostentatious display of their 'hybrid-ness' which allows them to believe that others see them as 'superior' citizens
b) the vast majority of hybrid buyers prefer a four-cylinder attached to the hybrid mechanism; apparently, 30MpG City & 37MpG HiWay isn't enough of an improvement over the four-cylinder Accord's 24 & 34, when for less money, a smaller, less comfortable car was available.)
Anyway ...
Imagine if the roof were a solar panel, further extending the life of these batteries, providing yet more electrical energy to drive this compressor. If the solar paneling could gather and provide enough energy [EDIT]to augment the regenerative braking system's contributions[/EDIT], the AC system might never need the engine!

Of course someone will complain about suffering an aesthetic penalty for such an odd-looking roof ...

Thanks for that. I don't know what sort of power is needed to drive a typical aircon pump but on a large "people carrier" type vehicle, I'd guess at a couple of bhp - in which case, no amount of solar cells on the roof is going to make much of an impression - especially in the cloud-covered wastes of Northern Britain! Of course it's also true that the aircon won't have to work as hard but a lot of people are discovering the joys of fast demisting on rainy days (of which we get plenty here)!

Just a few of the HOST of reasons why this is wrong :

Cold winters day - while stuck in snow ? or freezing in a queue ? ( mind the traffic warden is unlikely to be standing anywhere near)
Traffic wardens are getting mighty close to becoming the new traffic POLICE - VERY worrying ... the line is becoming very blurred !
Is this just 'in town' - another unclear confusing rule ?
Another cost to the already poor motorist
Another link to why the motorist is to blame for 'health of the nation now !
Another way to try and link Global 'warming' with Air Pollution and the Motorist !
I am not aware of any SMOG problems in this Country ?!
Again trying to solve an un-necessary problem, and fine the Motorist to boot !
Again taking away our ability to drive and our responsibility behind the wheel.
A greater cost and noise to the local area as everyone starts and stops their engines - all that revving up!
Greater wear to components, and so adding to costs.
As traffic starts the engines a greater increase in jumping forward in 1st gear accidents - thus further delays to the surrounding drivers!
Plus pedistrians are likley to then treat traffic queues as a great place to aimlessly walkways ! - until the engines start up again.
The psychology of 'having' to turn off engine WILL make people deliberately rev very hard in frustration.
the additional frustration will result in even further stress placed on the driver (and passengers) - as radios etc are constantly switched off and on.
Drivers - Already switch OFF IF the queue is a long wait anyway !
Does this apply to ALL vehicles ? tractors and big machinery - stopped road work vehicles - ambulances waiting to pick up and move off quickly - what if you turn on your engine as you heard an emergency vehicle to try and move your car - were you at fault or not ? How far can the TWarden take it ??? How many extra points will they get or even earn ?

Oh this is SUCH A BADLY thought out it is unbelievable that they are even trialling it !

Ironicly the train that they were waiting for (if deisel) starts its engine at 5am and doesn't turn off till the end of the day. Why because they are hard to restart? the engine blocks last longer with constant tempritures.
