CCTV has failed to cut crime despite huge investment in camera systems, a senior police officer has said.

Det Chief Insp Mike Neville, head of Scotland Yard's Visual Images, Identifications and Detections Office (Viido) said cameras do not act as a deterrent as many criminals assume they are not working.

And he admitted some police officers do not want to look through CCTV images "because it's hard work".

DCI Neville said only 3% of London's street robberies had been solved using CCTV images.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

I'd be interested to know what proportion of street robberies were solved by any other method to be honest, becasue I bet it's not that many.

So they didn't stop any then. Also, define "solved"?

That's the first time I've heard that spy cameras are meant to be a deterrent. If they are meant to be a deterrent why do they hide them? There's a whole road of the things in Southampton here they are designed to look like street lamps. I've been in a few supermarkets which have been infested with the black dome type cameras. One on every aisle it seems. It was horrible! These are not designed to be a deterrent at all.
