I heard an item on the (radio) news yesterday regarding a new trend of stealing the solar panel type thingies and batteries from road signs.
A safety campaigner was wheeled out to comment and although I can't remember verbatim it went something like...
"Well this is a particularly evil crime because the road signs are there to warn of impending hazards and so the theft of these items could lead to death or serious injury"

Oh Puhleeeeeeze!
I don't for one moment condone theft in any form but feel that it's a rather sweeping statement under the circumstances.

Surely if you are such a poor driver that you need a flashing sign to warn of a right turn or bend in the road ahead then you really shouldn't be on the road anyway.
I blame the journalist involved for running such drivel, it must have been a slow news day. It was only a small, parochial radio station but the mentality of absolute reliance upon automated road signs can only be propagated by rubbish such as this.

Or am I being needlessly cynical?

Well I wish someone would nick the bl^&*y batteries out of the one near me! It's in a 60 NSL and it flashes at anything over 40 telling you to slow down. It does so right in your face and with such intensity that you're night vision is stuffed for the next 100 yards or so! There's a perfectly good reason for it as there's a school nearby, but I can't help thinking that when it goes off at 10.00 at night, that's one hell of a detention!

Best coping strategy seems to be to drive past it as quick as possible with one's eyes shut.
