Just watched it.

We had "speed kills" rammed down our throats then rammed down some more. And then some more.

We had a bit about the naughty naughty people on the Stocksbridge bypass killing everyone with their excessive speed. To back this up we then go to the scene of a fatal RTA involving a speeding motorcyclist who hit the back of a car, killing his pillion passenger. So a clear case of speeding yes?

...except that the bike had completely worn out brakes, and the rider was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis. And in the same segment they were extolling the virtues of the SPECS cameras they've erected!

The only strange comment that arose from that was that the car involved had spun across the road and hit a lamp post full on sideways into the passenger door. The officer explained how the driver was lucky not to have a front seat passenger in with him, as they would undoubtedly have been killed, which was very clear from the wreckage of the car; but then went on to say how he was also lucky he'd hit the lamp post, as it stopped him from leaving the carriageway down a banking into a field, which he felt would have led to another fatality.

I was really surprised at someone who was (apparently) a qualified accident investigator saying this, as I'd have said that sideways into a lamp post is pretty much the worst accident scenario I can visualise - I'd rather take my chances with bouncing randomly off down a bumpy embankment any day of the week...

Then we had a chap nabbed by a TrafPol for doing 100ish on the M1 and tailgating the car in front, which was fair enough, especially when he was apparently oblivious to the marked traffic car following him for over 2 miles. Fair cop that one.

Then off we went to the newly formed Scamera Partnership, which was a classic. We had the operator complaining that all the cars weren't speeding, presumably because oncoming traffic was tipping them off. Apparently the accident rate is soaring in the county since the scammers started, so obviously this is because people aren't slowing down enough yet - more cameras please! After telling us about how he once netted 260 cars in two hours with his Lti DodgyScope the operator then admitted that he had 3 points on his licence for 72 in a 60, the f****ing hypocrite!

Sorry, but it just sounded like a whole heap of propaganda to me, and not very well thought out at that.

Agree with JT's summary of the programme. The talivan operator came across as smug and obviously pleased with his performance. I am sure he said that his 72 in a 60 was not as dangerous as the 36 in the 30 or something like that...


Prog started with the usual drivel that a reduction of 1 mph saves lives Er... driving well focussed on the road and conditions save lives....um ... COAST?

Senior plod did say that the scams only catch someone over a set limit, but failed to catch drunks, drugged, defectives, uninsured .... cue the driver who drove over the solid white but at the speed limit, followed by the motorcycle incident as described fully by JT. A token piece of balance?

The idiot in the Audi deserved to be pulled - talilgating at 100 mph?
He pulled the toilet excuse as well - for 40 minutes! After passing service stations as well ... and apparently there are certain emergency items on the market ... so my wife tells me!....

As for the silver hearse....speeding to get the deceased on the plane ...making PC Bort remark "It was so disrespectful to speed - even if the deceased has a plane to catch!" And he delivered this with a dead pan face too!

Seems this topic has fired off a few threads.

Watched the programme off and on during refs, having dealt with 3 motorway offences between 4 and 9, and a non injury rtc where driver was excess speed round a 30mph village corner while on his mobile. Luckily only hurt his pride and the farmers hedge.
Driver improvement scheme for him methinks.

The programme was about speed, but other than PC Bort's catching of the reservoir bladdered tailgater , the rest of the program was testimony to generally how poorly the establishment assesses and deals with problems relating to speed.
