Only toll route I know of in the UK that charges bikes too. Really makes the drivers behind happy when you have to stop, raise your visor, take off your glove, fish in your leathers for your wallet, pay your fine, then return wallet, replace glove, tuck glove back into cuff (for all weather riding) and lower visor before you can move off.

Apparently the Humber Bridge charges bikes as well.

I was driving up North from junction 1 of the M6 on Thursday night, the information boards were displaying "accident between junctions 4 & 5 M6". I nearly went down the M42/M5 to go round but decided to stay on the M6. When I got past the M42/M6 toll junction the information boards stopped displaying, when I arrived at junctions 4 and 5 there was no sign of any accident or traffic build up. Now I wonder if they were just trying to make drivers use the M6 toll?

Pah - that is utterly outrageous. How can they justify that sort of hike AGAIN? It's odd how wages only ever go up by inflation but the cost of services seem to go up by several times inflation.

I noticed whilst shopping today that 6 eggs is now £1.28 - less than a year ago that was less than 85p. Small things, but add them all up over the year and it's a huge difference

Must be golden eggs - Mrs B refuses to pay over the odds for eggs, and most supermarts cheap eggs are only about 60p/6, and the price per egg comes down drastically if you buy them in 15 s

But surely bikers would ber considerate, move to the far left to do all this, letting cars filter past, until they are ready to do this?

By the far left you presumably mean the 'tag only' lane, which would be quite useless without a tag. Failing that, I am certain you are not advocating stopping on the hard shoulder of a motorway, which is illegal in all situations other than an emergency.

I was joking Robin.

However, joking apart, surely as a nation we should recognise this difficulty and deal with it somehow.

no no, I am also one who hates to pay over the odd's for eggs. But these were standard tesco free range medium, 1.28. As a result, I went for the Tesco Value 6 eggs, which still came to 73p (and I remeber them being down in 20p's a year ago)

go to tesco.com to see, it's all on there :(

The prices of a lot of basic foodstuffs, particularly bread, eggs and dairy produce, have rocketed recently. A 250g portion of butter that not so long ago cost about 80p is now £1.20 or more :(

I thought it was more than eggs... i havent brought butter in ages and bread never seems to have big signs advertising cost. Milk (another essential!) is one which seems to be rising every time i return for more  it's a complete joke that it can continuely happen and nothing much be made of it... whilst the government insists the economy is at it's strongest ever, people are struggling more than ever to simply afford the weekly bills - gas, leccy, water + food, let alone petrol and luxury goods (clothes, electronics and the like)

I wonder how many bikes use it....after all bikes don't get stuck in traffic!

This all serves as a warning to anyone about road charging of any kind.

Fuel duty and VED (the current form of travel tax) has to be approved in a budget but tolls are at the complete "discretion" of the operating authority..... :x

It is yet another move towards government by Quango.

Or to put it another way, another Stealth Tax.

It should be pointed out that the M6Toll charges are set by a private company, Midlands Expressway Ltd, and the government when it planned the road rather short-sightedly put no kind of mechanism in place to control increases. Given that traffic volumes on the road have proved very disappointing, MEL are pursuing a cynical revenue-maximisation strategy with no regard to the wider good.

I can’t comment too much but, I’d be interested to know who the “Midlands Expressway Ltd” stakeholders actually are.

hmm, I don't think there would be many private companies willing to take on such a service if there were clauses that it couldn't adjust the price of the service.

OK, but they shouldn't be allowed to increase prices at the rate they are.
