The quality of the roads themselves is likely to also be highly significant. Germany had the first motorway network, so they tend to have shorter slip roads, narrower lanes, more 2/4 lane roads and tighter bends

I worked in Germany for a while, due to the superb layout of the M/ways, i found myself traveling everywhere by m/way.

I can take my wife on my bike at average speed of 120 mph German M/way's, yet she starts to panick at anything above 80 mph in the UK. Despite most of Germany being only 2 lanes.

German M/ways are far superior in terms of surface.

A first sentence that struck me as absolute truth is:

You will never have an accident for which you are not to blame.

Nah. It isn't absolute truth. Sooner or later some folk will have random bad luck crashes. Maybe about 5% of crash involvements fall into this category. Examples include an oncoming vehicle swerving into your path at the last second, mechanical failure in a well maintained vehicle and "random" behaviour of animals.

What it is is a code to live by. Good drivers take full responsibility for their mistakes, and take full responsibility for avoiding the mistakes of others.

I agree. It is a code to drive by.

How do you categorise the instances where you are rammed from behind while stationary? This has happened to me several times in my driving career, and I have looked back and considered that in every case except one, there was absolutely nothing I could have done about it.

We do discuss this from time to time. In the most general case you had the option of choosing a position to stop whereby you could still have driven out of the way before the crash. In practice this means stopping or slowing well short of the obstruction and monitoring the mirror for anyone unable to stop.

Can anyone post a link to one of the earlier discussions?

Happened to me twice in the previous 20 years (2 out of the 2 accidents I got alltogether). That is why I agree with Safespeed: it is a code to drive by.

Before i was hit from rear i used to leave good space in front of me, now i leave more - especially when i am the exposed car at rear of queue. But space can always be filled, by pedestrian, cyclists etc, so the option of moving forward is not always so clear cut.

In my case i would have moved forward had i seen car in mirror, as stop line for traffic lights was good cars length back from junction - however had another vehicle on green light taken wide turn then i may well have gone straight into it - and if car behind had not hit me then i would have been at fault for the accident. Such is life.
