I'm sure everyone here is familiar with "phishing" emails. Spam claiming from your bank or whoever asking for your bank details and password. If not here is a sample.

Dear Royal Bank of Scotland Direct and Digital Banking Service customer!

Our Technical Subdivision is performing an arranged Digital Banking Service update

By clicking on the link below you will open the procedure of the member login approval:

http://www.rbsdigital.com.portal9785696 ... .htm?host=

These directions are to be emailed and followed by all members of the Royal Bank of Scotland Digital Banking Service

Royal Bank of Scotland Direct and Digital Banking Service does apologize for any inconveniences caused to you, and is very appreciative for your help.
The URL in this example actually goes to. http://www.rbsdigital.com.ssid03042749.bevhef.yn.cn/update/default.aspx/refererident.htm?token=

Anyway, standard advice is to ignore these emails and delete them. I'm asking that you don't do this. If everyone who knows about this scam were to click the link and fill in crap, fake account details, it will make it a lot harder to actually get any money. I'm sure only a 1% percent of people fall for it, but they only need one.. Unless of course 99% of their results are spam.

Petty revenge, or helping to prevent fraud, you decide but please join in. It'll only take a minute of your time.

Three years (?) ago, when the first live sites were appearing I rang the computer crime unit at Scotland Yard. When they told me that it was getting harder and harder to take the sites down because they were in Russia (and other hard-to-control countries) I proposed to them at the time that THEY should be swamping the sites with false data.

So I do think it's a good idea, but I don't think that members of the public doing it is really the right approach.

haha, what a great idea.

what would be really cool is if someone wrote a program to do it automatically, constantly.

well CID in conjunction with ISP's could blacklist sites. Although, once you go down that road.... be carefull what you wish for

The problem with that (and the police doing it) is it's easy to detect and filter since it will all be coming from the same IP address (or the same netblock at least). If everyone just submits one, and they're all coming from known home-user netblocks (eg. Telewest, BT, Tiscali, Demon etc.) it will basically be impossible to tell which is real.

Well if you use Firefox, it already checks a blacklist, I think Google run it. It just says "Firefox things this site may be a scam" do you want to proceed yes/no. I think this approach is better than letting the government start censoring the internet.

You have to be careful with doing that. Spammers are becoming savvy and (I believe) are now burying trojans within such pages.
IMO people should go with the standard advice, unless they are really tech savvy and can see and understand what's going through their pipe.

Please remember who you're dealing with. These are not nice people at all. I would suggest using a proxy at the very least.

Smeggy is right. This is a VERY bad idea. Often opening the email and clicking on a link will get a Trojan downloaded on to your computer which will get your real bank account details and/or turn to your computer into a slave.

Just deleting them is the best option.

Well yes, if you're still running Outlook and IE whilst running with admin privelages then this is quite likely. I kinda thought most people here would be better than that though.

You are not one of those "Bill Gates is Satan" nutters, are you? :o

And I write as someone who doesn't use Outlook at home (though at work that is what we have to use) and who uses Firefox at home by choice.

By the way, if you knew your advice could have been potentially dangerous for anyone using Outlook and IE, don't you think you should have warned people in your original post? Or not?

I have to confess, it's been so long since I encountered anyone still using them, that I kinda forgot, besides even IE prompts you before installing stuff, so it's only dangerous if you're the kind of user that click OK to every dialogue box that pops up, without ever reading it.

I haven't found any malware on phishing pages yet. Though it could be that I've just not looked hard enough, or not looked at the same pages as you.

I never bother to open them.

I have 5 or 6 email addresses (which are plastered on the firm's various websites) so I have to delete about 300 spam emails a day.

Our external email service provider does have a spam filter, but traps so many legit emails that it is worse than useless.

Me too! And what about the paper equivilent - junk mail! (Oh sorry post office, you don't call it that do you?) IT'S JUNK - OK?

I say bring back pen and paper and teach the kids to weed n white again. When I see kids handwriting today it looks like a spider fell in an ink pot and ran across the paper.

In fact, I think we should hang everyone under 18 and start again - unless they're nice by my definition which is: 'treat everyone as you would wish to be treated yourself'.

There - just gotta find a cure for all known disease and I'm done. :)
