The new 2007 series of Police, Camera, Action! is substantially different to the 1994-2002 episodes. It's presented by Alastair Stewart, as in the previous series, but he's taken a back seat, and Adrian Simpson is the main presenter.

But should he be there at all?
On one side he is a convicted drink driver, who crashed his car whilst drunk.

on the other side he has served his penalty and under the rehabilitation of offenders act it might be ileagal to not give him his slot?

i saw it last night, they followed a GMP traffic cop around pulling drivers using the phone whilst driving, the odd chase, interestingly though there were many clips where video footage showed drivers breaking whatever offences, a lot of these video sessions had the LTI cross hairs on them, i was under the impression that the SCP's ignored all other offences as long as they got their £60, or do they pass these other offences on for the consideration of the plod

second time he was 3 times over the limit.

I can't stand the way he goes on about dangerous driving, when he clearly has no basis for understanding. He doesn't understand know the first thing about advanced driving, dribbles out police and govt. propaganda and clearly doesn't take road safety seriously.

personally I think some of the ex-top gear presenters might be more appropriate as they at least know a thing or two about driving

I don't think Mr Stuart should be on tv preaching about dangerous driving. Anyone that is convicted twice of drink driving should have their licence removed for a minimum of 5 years. Being caught while banned should put them in prison. They certainly shouldn't be on tv telling others how to behave.

That's what I thought, and what does it for me.
Being done once for DD (and actually crash) is bad enough but to do it again a fairly short time later, and to be a long way over both times? I don’t think so!

It's the spectacularly patronising tone of the programme that cracks me up! A real throwback to the days when the BBC ("Aunty") and TV in general was a force for the moral development of the nation!

It's a pity that they don't actually acknowledge that some of these joyriders are pretty darned good up to a point, - I'm pretty certain if I tried driving like that I'd probably crash sooner than they do!

Naturally, this doesn't mean I condone it for one second, but, in the same way as one has to grudgingly admire the car thief who can take a well-protected car in a very short time without leaving a mark on it, one also has to admit that some of these lads are quite good as (some) aspects of car control. Clealry it has no place on a public highway but it would be interesting to give some of the best of tem recognition and training and see if they could become successful police and / or motorsport drivers themselves.

Was it just me that thought that test for how distracting using the phone is on last nights show was a bit crap, they were asking him stupid logic problems that require a hell of lot more thinking to answer than questions your likely to be asked on the phone such as "when will you be here?", "where are you?", "you coming the pub tonight?"

Absolutely, it's all about dumbing-down and making the public THINK it's scientific. Always cracks me up that the police (apparently) don't get distracted using hand-held microphones and 2-way radios when in hot pursuit but apparently, if they used mobiles,they'd be crashing all over the place!

I've often thought that if some of those 'joy riders' were taken to a rally school and properly tutored they could be future rally champions. It is, after all, exactly the same sort of car-control skills and balance that is required. All a lot of them need is the opportunity and the initial cash.
At the start of a club rally stage at which I was marshalling with my son a couple of years ago, one of the later numbers on his first proper event asked how fast he needed to drive the test. My son's classic reply was "drive it as if you've stolen it!"

I have watched a few programmes about police.

Driver with Class A drugs in the car, and suspected stolen vehicle - no prosecution.
Car thief - £40 fine
Girl parks next to a Zebra - thumped for £60 and 3 points.

It seemed to me, that the worse the driving or offence in general, the lesser the punishment, or in some cases, no punishment at all. It was the minor offences that always got the £60 FPNs.

And then there is the new scam allowing councils to fine for minor moving traffic offences. It's now a new gold mine to add to parking offences. One place in Lambeth where traffic in one direction must give way - 6500 tickets in 6 weeks, and clear falsification of evidence. But of course this stuff no longer goes in front of the beaks, or it would have been exposed by now, and the council responsible put in the dock for perverting the course of justice

Well I do occasionally use the phone while driving, but only for brief and simple communcations - nothing involving lengthy or complicated matters.

So far as that test was concerned I don't think I'd have had much trouble with it. When they got to the silly questions designed to overload the driver, I'd have told them to bu99er off, leave me to get on with the driving and I'd chat to them later - but it would probably be in terms unsuitable for polite company!

Have tried (pre mobile phone law times ) to use mobile with and without hands free kit. Found that using kit was more distracting than just plonking phone on ear. OK- i'm driving with just one hand - just like changing gear etc etc . But primarily my mind is on road, not call .
