That really epitomises the utter incompetence and lack of common sense when it comes to council road planning. But why does it keep happening? What needs to change to stop this kind of utter nonsense? AFAIK it's a relatively recent phenomenon.

To be fair... dont those street lamps look awfully close together as well?

I'm sure that on the ground, close up, those dismount signs (are they compulsory?) wont be quite as close together as they look!
That said, I agree they are completely unnecessary.

And how much did that cost?

Those horrible blue signs are really distracting.

As a matter of interest, what is the penalty for cycling in the lane designated for walking, or indeed for walking in the lane designated for cycling?

I was wondering this as I went down the cycle path from Lancaster to Morecambe with my young daughter the other week:

If she wobbles into the "walking" lane will she get a ticket? If so it can only be a matter of time before there is some sort of camera surveillance in place to make sure everyone pays up - if there's a possibility of £60 in it then I guess CSCP will have a van parked there before you can say "Ker-ching!

If you wish to overtake can you cross the (solid) line?

What do you do when you come across the inevitable group of chavs [what is the collective noun? An asbo of chavs perhaps?] stood blocking the cycle part of the path? I never realised riding a bike could be so complicated!

It's like apartheid is alive and well and living in England, isn't it? Cyclists in this lane, walkers in that lane, cars in this lane, smokers outside the pub, drinkers inside the pub etc etc.

i can see a ped xing, and looking at the map it appears to be approaching a roundabout, so i might expect more street lighting then normal.

however the site does tell you how long it is:

Quote:
This particularly daunting section, requires seven dismounts within a distance of 380 yards

Are the dismounts compulsory?

I dont dismount at Brockhole on the A591 - there has never been any need - but am I committing an offence?

It's definitely a 'long' (i.e. telephoto) lens. Such lenses provide a foreshortened perspective.

Instruction.

By the way cyclists breaking the speed limit in Richmond Park and cycling in the pedestertrian area on the promenade at Bounemouth have been known to have had £30 fines imposed.

clicky

I dont think I would be dismounting unless I felt I was about to be put at risk... 8-)

You can see that the site is nowhere near as complex as it looks in that picture though!! :)

What we REALLY need is a road sign, which should be compulsory, with a £1000 fine for ignoring it, saying "USE COMMON SENSE".
Of course the council should have to abide with this too!! :)

Do we really need signs for every damn thing? We know it's illegal to walk around naked but we don't have signs everywhere.

Maybe we should have more signs?

Don't joy ride
Don't sound your horn after 11 p.m
Don't piddle in the park
Beware of the signs!

The list could be endless. A jungle of signs...

I showed this picture to my kids who both ride bikes for their paper rounds. They laughed and thought it was photoshopped until I told them it wasn't. Their immediate questions were:
How much did they waste on that?
What idiot put them up?
Why didn't they put the pedestrian lane on the left (looking at the picture)?

One is 13 and the other 15.

The distance is actually 380 yards; it says so on the Warrington web-site.

I imagine the scenario COULD be that the footpath/cycleway was designed and built by a private firm...developer or PFI etc.

Then, in order to score some spurious political/commercial points the local authority will have refused to accept the works until the letter of the regulations were complied with.

You may mock but I have personal experience.

On the other hand it could simply be incompetance.

This occurred to me re: the smoking ban the other day. Eventually we'll know smoking is banned indoors, so will we need signs saying 'no smoking' forever?

The signs will be required for as long as they can get away with fining us for not displaying them I'm sure.
