Went on my 1st visit to Kendal yesterday since Christmas...

Noticed the signs have been changed at the traffic lights outside the town hall. If you are heading towards Windermere, used to be NO Entry signs up Highgate, now it's "No motor vehicles" sign (the classic beware of airborne motorbikes thingy  )

Not convinced these are legally enforcable to stop traffic going the "wrong" way up Highgate because motor vehicles are permitted on that road, just not in that direction! I have zero faith in the council anyway given previous cock ups over the one way system!

I saw one vehicle drive down Highgate the wrong way, much to the anger of bus drivers, much gesturing and horn blowing :P

Anyone else got any views on this, are they enforcable? In any event not very good use of the signs as how many people know what the sign means anyway?

They have done this in Poole. I don't expect anyone pays any notice because of course there are cars coming the other way on a two way street so you don't think "maybe there is a restriction here". And you can get on the road past the signs from another road anyway. I'm sure the ones in Poole are wrong because they have excepted 'cycles' from the types of 'motor vehicle' they want to prohibit....?!

Maybe you could ask the nice council for the TRO those signs refer to?

There was a letter in the Gazette this week complaining about vehicles driving "the wrong way" down Highgate since the sign change.

Dont know why Cumbria CC removed the no entry signs. Yes, there's the cycle lane, but maybe they shoud read the Highway Code definition of the no entry sign

Twice driving along Kirkland I've been passed by an on coming car (english plates) going the wrong way down the oneway street, each time I've been amazed they've not caused a crash before releaf at me taking the right hand lane.

Couple of times I've been waiting at Maude Street to see a car dart from Windermere Rd onto Stricklandgate ignoring signs (only buses can do this causing traffic jams in the process).

Regularly I see cars come out of Ann Street ignoring the oneway sign and darting across the roundabout.

Yes the Maude St/Stricklandgate junction has been abused since the day it opened. I nearly got cleaned up there last summer as I headed towards Windermere from Sandes Ave - someone went straight across without looking

Police did take action a while ago about vehicles turning right out of Kent St over the bridge so how about it BIB?

Last year there was a BIB stood on the corner of Maude St whilst a vehicle waited to make the illegal turn into Maude St, traffic blocked behind them. The vehicle eventually turned onto Maude St and parked. What did the BIB do, you guessed it, absolutely nothing, not even a "word". :o Dereliction of duty frankly

There is no need to make a right into Maude Street - one should either park on Craghills old forecourt, or do a U-turn in Sandes Avenue, before you reach Briggs!

If they had put a roundabout at the Blackhall road junction, it would have made a better job than the lights, which a lot of the time are timed all wrong for the amount of traffic! There must BE a worse system than Kendal.... but for the life of me I cannot think where!

On a related topic - dodgy signage in Kendal - there's one that always makes me chuckle when I go past it.

Leaving Kendal via Milnthorpe Road There is a narrow lane that goes off to the right up past the college. At the end of this a fancy blue sign has now been erected which reads something like:

"This road is for use by residents only and NOT for vehicular access to xyz school".

Is the road private? I suspect not, as I'm sure if it were then the sign would mention the fact.

Assuming it is a public right of way, is there any legal grounds by which vehicles can be restricted access purely on the purpose of their journey? Obviously "Except for access" is a standard caveat for a "no vehicles" sign but that wouldn't apply here, as anyone going to the school that lies up the cul de sac would be legitimately using it for access.

What seems most likely to me is that the council have erected this impressively large sign under pressure from residents in order to falsely give the impression that using the road would be an offence, but only for people other than themselves!

We really do need a central authority for roads and signage - this kind of nonsense really does higlight the consequences of councils doing things they're not qualified to do. Their power needs to be taken from them.

Would that be Hawksmead Avenue, leading to Dean Gibson School?

I go there often on business - I dont know any other way!

I must mention this to a few friends who have a dislike of being told they shouldn't do something, when they have every right to do it!!

Yep I know the sign and it looks pretty reasonable to me, you can't access the school via that lane by vehicle as it's gated shut at the top, I expect it's the school that has requested the council put the sign up so visitors don't drive up the lane to the school as lots of kids use it to the 4 main schools/colleges at that end of town from all the estates on that side of Milnthorpe Rd.

There's nothing legally to stop you driving a car along that lane, the sign is just warning it's pointless unless you're a resident along that lane
