I was driving on M55 today, left Blackpool, and at the end of the M55, after passing the roundabout for Preston, I wanted to go M6 south. The road is in 4 lanes after Preston roundabout (2 left lanes for M6 north, 2 right lanes for M6 south).

I took M6 south. As you take them lanes, its stretches for about 1/2 mile, turning slightly to the right, but at the end of that 1/2 mile is a sharpish right turn which has a sign about 40 yards before it with a triangle warning signing of right turn, and underneath it "50 MPH". Behind that was a mobile speed camera.

I was going over 57mph, about 58/59 mph on road before you can really see the 50 mph sign. I assume it is a 70mph zone of motorway. Anyway, the two cameras were out on a tripod in front of the van. Leading up to the tripods as I was going about 58-59 mph there were about 8-9 cars closer to the tripods than I was.

I know the camera concentrates a laser on the registration plate of a car and can lodge speed within seconds, but how quick a turnaround can a speedcam like this have? For instance, how many cars can it do in say 30seconds if the operator is trying to work fast?

Also, the 50 mph permanent speed-limit sign. When does that 50mph come into force? When you pass it or when you can read it, say 100 yards from it or something.

Does anyone know this stretch of road and maybe encountered this mobile camera before?

:50: Comes into effect at the point you pass it.

Was it definitely a :50: or was it one of those corner warnings with a max speed listed underneath (those are not mandatory).

Hello Robin,

Thanks for reply. It was definitely a red triangle with a right turning corner on the inside of it. Below it, in a white rectangular box with no border on it was written 50 MPH. Nothing else was listed.

So, that is not mandatory? You feel it is a recommended speed to take the corner possibly?

are you sure it was a mobile camera van, two cameras on tripods sounds very much like ANPR to me

Thats exactly what it is.

Personally I feel that if drivers cannot decide on an appropriate speed to negotiate a corner, without spearing off the road, all by themselves then they shouldn't be allowed on the roads!

Speed limit comes into effect at the point of the lolly as in :ss: :20: :30: :40: :50: :60: :nsl:

It's a fave trick of theirs to be just within the lolly but zapping folk as they see this lolly and accelerate towards it

If it's advisory .. no problems.

However .. this is LanCASH£re and at 57 mph in a 50 mph .. you may be in the threshold for the Speed Aware if they do decide to send a NIP .. and you admit "speeding" They did adjust the limits of the course to across the range up to 10% + 5.

The course as we understand is very good.. COAST based ..and certainly better than most on offer from reports from those who have completed it - but it's the manner of those invites and the setting of the scams which undermine it to a great extent.

Do let us know how you get on.. and by all means post up on pepipoo and PH as well.

But was this a rectangle (advisory) or in a red circle (limit)

Hi Toon.

Sorry mate but I dont know what ANPR is. Can you explain? Yes, when passed it was a parking police van clearly marked and two tri-pods were on the road next to it, with cameras on top of it.

I was home for about an hour and I decided to drive back to look at it again as it was bugging me. It was dusk at this time and the van was parked without the tripods this times, but at the back of the van, at the top, you could see two small rectangular darkened holes which I assume they stick a camera out of.

Sorry for all the questions but this is bugging me and I dont wanna be worrying for 14 days checking the post every morning hoping no fine and points can come through.

Thanks Moggie.

Defo a red triangle with right turning corner in it. Immediately below was a white rectangular box with no border with 50 mph written in it.

Cheers fella. Appreciate the responses. The advisory speed seems to be the situation I think. I was not going over 59mph which was a stretch of motorway and there wasnt a roadwork in sight, to reduce speed limit.

Just for info, the traffic police were rife around the M6 junctions 32-29 tonight, and off course, the end of the M55.

ANPR automatic number plate reader, they pick up tax dodgers, mot dodgers, insurance dodgers, police computer inteligence markers and the like,

two tripods two lanes of traffic the best give away with ANPR is before the next junction there will be patrol cars

AUTOMATED NUMBER PLATE RECOGNITION ..which more or less tells the cops if you paid VED etc. But it does rather rely on DVLA updating the database and folk telling them the bought or sold a car and registering it in the first place.

But then that's also why scam enforcement is fundamentally flawed as it tends to fine the legal who blip over .. but not the truly dangerous who are not qualified and nothing about their presence behind the wheel of anything with a motor on the road is .. er .. legal

[color=green]Toon. Maybe that is why there were loads of cars being stopped tonight as you progressed on to the M6 which was about 20-30 seconds later. So it sounds like they have been checking registration plates for tax, etc... they can check this instantly? and then get a car on M6 behind them to pull over the culprits??

It is quite probable that this was an ANPR on this basis. Hope things work out fine for you anyway. I think if it was a scamvan.. you would be offered the Speed Course if blipped at the speed showing on your speedo.

Also be aware that the speedo on the dash can and does over-read .. and we reckon a 3 mph discrepancy based on the reading of the GPS version  So if your speedo registered 58 mph .. you would have probably been recorded at 55 mph

By the way .. forgot to say :welcome:

I know this junction quite well since I use it every work day.

The speed limit sign for the bend is definitely not mandatory (no red circle). The suggested limit of 50 mph is a bit slow for any decent car but might be appropriate for a large van or truck.

Regards

On SC they used to enforce both ways - with cars etc on both sides -don't know if they still do it(was a dead giveaway) - haven't seen one for a while - also at times a generator can be seen , usually chained to the van.( another do they still do this ).Another giveaway is the vehicle - all of the vans i've seen have been Vauxhalls(like in ree.t's pic), - perhaps something to do with the weight/room needed.

Agree with what Mallycoop says. It's only a suggestion due to the tightness of the bend. In the last couple of months they have carried out some work to the road surface on the bend to improve grip. I've seen numerous cars in the barrier on the outside of the bend and also on the inside up the grass embankment. They are due to do the same on the bend leaving the M6 (north)/M55 junction.

Never seen the ANPR on leaving the M55 onto the M6 but you often see them on top of the first bridge on the M55 after leaving the M6, with the police cars waiting at the Kirkham junction.
