Whilst it will probably save more lives than the speed cameras, I'm still not convinced it's a good idea. If a driver chooses not to wear their seatbelt then let them crash and die horribly. Ok if it's children in the car then maybe it's a bit different.

Then again, this could be just because I'm currently rather annoyed at nannying about the seatbelt from the Vauxhall Astra hire car I was driving today. I had a very delicate old ocmputer on the front seat since I didn't want it to get any sudden impacts, and this basically meant I did 300 miles with the sodding Astra going "bing bing bing bing" constantly and flashing the seatbelt at me.. for 5 hours. Argh!

If the computer was so delicate why not strap it in? I usually do... :)
I have heard people also get around these things by attaching the seat belt then sitting on it.
I suppose I should have suggested that 300 miles ago really... :bunker:

It wasn't really big enough to strap to anything, and was also a funny shape due to still having mounting brackets attached (not rackmount rails)

But yes, I should have thought about just sitting it on top of the seatbelt. I feel like a moron now.

Nah it's just an excuse to test the idea out by acquiring another old computer. ;)

No can do. I am fortunately rid of the Astra.. now I just have to get rid of the backache caused by crappy vauxhall seats.

Oh and I have plenty of old computers. This was not one of them :)

Going back to the original topic, there's currently roadworks on the M5 between junctions 16 and 17 in both directions. The usual too-low 40mph limit, with big signs saying "speed cameras".

Except...

They've painted white graduation lines on the road, but there are no cameras in sight.

Obviously costs too much to put them in - and with everyone using PACE and other tricks to put the scammers out of business they decided to bluff it.

Don't assume they are not there !
I have seen several installations where the buried sensors and road marking are there and waiting for a portable unit to be plugged in.

A horrific accident on the A14 this morning just outside Ipswich and very near to where I live showed the importance of seat belt for everybody. A car hit a deer but managed to stop. A small car containing six people hit the dead deer and lost control. Two of the occupants, one an eight year old child, who were not strapped in were thrown from the car and then run over and killed by a third vehicle. The A14 was shut for 9 hours.

Strangely , I love Vauxhall seats --found on all marques from FD series to latest astra (including corset), superior to Ford(except top of range)----From my opinion - Vauxhall fit a comfortable seat in all cars , unlike Ford., whose seat varies like price of car- from bad in fiesta to poor in fukus, and good in transit.

Funny, cos my friend has an Astra (L-reg estate) and I find the seats in that very uncomfortable and too high up (I keep banging my head on the ceiling).

Whereas my first car was an M-reg Fiesta - and the seats in that were fine.

Nowadays I drive an Audi A4 (56-plate)... and it's like driving from your armchair - I love it!
