Both petitions have jumped up now - I suspect they've simply disabled the realtime updates of frontpage names and totals to ease strain on an obviously strained database. I'd guess they'll be running periodic batch updates at quiet times rather than updating on each insert. Or at least that's what I'd do if I was running the site.

Ha! I came here to post just about exactly that. :)

Now shot up to 5269 and 25th overall, overtaking the Gurkhas, non-geographic telephone numbers and university tuition fees. There are three more above within about 200 votes.

It is now 2nd in the transport and infrastructure section, 2nd only to that big one and that will expire next week so it will soon be #1 (for the section).

It's currently 22nd overall and will soon leapfrog a whole bunch more.

Still 22nd with 5,889 sigs.

Some nice publicity today in a major local paper: Press and Journal

I've also recorded a long interview on the subject with local radio this morning (MFR).

[I'm about 30 items behind with Safe Speed in the News and Media forum, hopefully I'll get it done today.]

Radio 4 mentioned the travel tax petition recently, they also mentioned that it was not the only one on the site. And they appeared to like the "stand on his head and juggle ice cream" one.

Now 16th with 6,700, after just 5 days. It's put on about 1,800 in the last 24 hours.

The '0870' one is catching us up. Looks like we might be overtaken for the first time.

If anyone hasn't signed yet (and wants to) now would be a very good time...

That's one that is obviously likely to appeal to a lot of people looking at the site for the first time.

On the other hand, the Cyprus flights one, which is the next above, sounds like the product of intensive lobbying by a special interest group.

Now 7,063, and we're hanging on for dear life just ahead of the 0870 one. The gap's been down to just 1, and up to 15 again. Now it's at 4.

Why does the position in the league table matter?

If it's "Top Twenty" or "Top Ten" or "Top Five", it has more public impact.

Just like record charts - chart position is more important than absolute sales.

Both have now overtaken Cyprus.

0870: 7122

Speed Cameras: 7120

Cyprus: 7107

Anyway, I signed the 0870 one ages ago - it's a disgraceful ripoff :P
