Most points remain on your licence for 4 years, but are only 'active' for totting up purposes for 3 years from the date of offence. The extra year is to allow for bans to be applied when the legal process is delayed by up to a year for later offences.

Points for some severe offences remain for 11 years on your licence, but count for totting up for 10 years. This certainly includes drink driving offences, and I think includes some classes of dangerous driving offences.

Your insurance company can ask if you have had any points in the last five years.

This is true, but nothing to do with the points or how long they stay on the licence.

The 5 year limit is down to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
