I've posted on a police forum with regards to a speeding question and have received a rather hostile response!

I think my argument stands up but the police obviously know better than me.

What was the question you asked them?

If i were to misread a speed sign (say I did 40 in a 30 zone) and get caught by the 2 or three cameras on the same half mile of road, am i liable for all three fines and the full 9 points? Surely I have commited only one offence so would only be liable for one fine and 3 points?

In law if its on the same road and short time spans then it is classed as an ongoing offence, you should be liable for all 9 points but in reality you would probably get dealt with by the magistrates with a fine and points that reflect your plea.

If they were all around the same speed then there would be no aggravating factors, but on the other hand if they are like 46 53 49 etc in a thirty then you could get all 9 points.

99% of all speed enforcement cameras are not run by the police anymore they are governed by camera partnerships and they set the limits which are a lot less than when the police run them however I can only speak for my force on this .

This is where the Orwelian "all are equal, but some are more equal " comes in .

Contrast this with someone who is caught with three illegal tyres on a car - points can only be applied once ---so thats 3 points for a more dangerous offence and the fine ( seem to remember something on DVLA site - that treated as one offence, but obviously fine will be more, but not as much as three offences)

But then , to the system ,Speeding is the Dangerous offence

No - can't find the DVLA bit - it's gone to some horrible Direct gov site, but it definately said " 3 tyres = one offence =3 points + £££££)----not exactly a deterrent.

Any BiB confirm ??? (please)

It used to be in the "rules" that tripping more than one camera in the SAME zone was considered to be one offence. Cumbria got caught out on on this one when they were claiming that two cameras in one zone equals two offences when they did a piece in the press. I don't know what it says now though.

How far does the "one offence" thing go?

In theory I could drive from, say, London to Carlisle at a constant 90mph, tripping mobile cameras elonging to a number of camera partnerships.

Is that still one offence, SP50 speeding on a motorway, 60 quid please?

Blackpoo... per the Gazette around 2003... person ended up on 6 points and one speed course for passing 3 Gatsos between North Pier and Bispham. :rolleyes at 34-35 mph..

Not sure how it works on that cluster on the way back to the M55 though.. (where that little windmill is.. A584? A583..?) Those are literally yards apart

Speaking of Blackpoo! - Wildy already posted on PH about the really "unfunny" illuminations. There are some which depict a throwaway camera and roll of film. There's a Gatso near them.. and the illuminations flash the camera flash on these "camera decorations" . We were stationary by one of these in the jam when it (the decoration camera flash gun ) started flashing in our rear mirror :rotfl: .... the Wild :neko: one was hissing up at it.. :rotfl: - especially as we were under signs which read "Flash Bang Wallop" at the time ...:hehe: I saw the funny side - just   .. but Wildy wondered about whether or not people thought they really were pinged..

In reality you would get dealt with for all the cameras you tripped seperately if they were in different force areas so say you tripped one in London (met) then Birmingham (west Mids) 2 in Stafford (Staffs) etc etc then you couldnt lump them together as they are all seperate, so, by the time you get to Carlisle you would probably be getting train back or hitching a lift  .

The one offence thing doesn't go as far as overloading though.

Or at least in my case it didn't since I was fined for overloading the front axle, overloading the rear axle and overloading the van. £25 a piece (no points) IIRC, which my employer paid. It probably cost them more to come out to the weighbridge and remove the extra tonne of leaflets they had stuck in my van.

Wouldn't getting flashed by the first camera alert you to your misreading though?

Not if it was a truvelo, talivan or SPECS, and no doubt some people will come up with more.

Truvello - you'd know - the flash is visible.
Talivan - they either use the "dodgiescope " or the buried detector -so no no sign.
Specs - no .
Have seen in the past a pair of cops with gun and notepad -but not sure if this was speed check or "enforcement"

Oh I dunno .... they see Gatso and that flash.. some folks may not realise that it's the illiuminatons.

Besides.. the takings are reportedly down despite a long warm summer ..

Lakes? Windermere/Bowness/Ambleside had reportedly lower takings which they attribute to the speed limit on the waters

Rest competed fair enough ..

Way too much flashing - time for a Mad Doc to enter scene ( with Novacain and tools ) and remove flashing equipment
