I have an old RR (Range Rover) that needs an MOT.

The Petrol fuel system is shot! (It leaks big time) I have drained it so this is not a safety problem.

I have LPG as an alternative. But the gas level is "Low"

Legaly speaking, can I make a "detour" on my way to the test station to top up the LPG tank?

I'm not a lawyer, but last time I heard this questions asked, the conclusion was that it was legal to go to the MOT station via a filling station.

I don't think there is any legal provision, but I'm not sure how they expect people who are low on fuel to get to an MOT station too far away. Perhaps it's something the court is supposed to decide on a case-by-case basis.

Anyway, one problem is that the fuel system needs to be sound, regardless of whether it is being used or not. I think you would need to remove the petrol fuel system otherwise a tester who does it by the book should fail it.

You shouldn't have a problem in stopping for fuel on the way to a pre booked MOT, although as Gareth has stated, you will need to remove the petrol fuel system in it's entirety otherwise it will be an MOT failure.

In the highly unlikely event that you do encounter an over zealous copper on the way to get fuel, the worst that can happen is you will get a fine for having no MOT (it is not an endorsable offence).

What are the chances of a BiB seeing you? :o

There's an untaxed London cab with advertising on it parked 100yards from a police station in Saltburn!

Thanks for the replies!

I know the petrol leaks will constitute a fail (Having said that, with a drained tank, How will they know? ) its just that the poor old thing is "Very" rusty underneath and I dont want to spend out fixing it if it is going to fail "Big time" somewhere else!

(If it does Ill break it, Ill re-chassis a landie but a RR is a bit much!)

Visual examination of the fuel line.

On the subject of fuel - to test the emmissions engine has to be left to get to temperature - some garages are a bit funny about low fuel .
As for the petrol tank - if it only fails on that - you know where you stand.
Cheaper to retest with petrol system removed ??
